England seek consistency after rushed decisions from third umpire

England captain Joe Root and head coach Chris Silverwood spoke with the match referee Javagal Srinath after the first day of the third Test in Ahmedabad to ask for more "consistency" in the third umpire process.

Two incidents were referred to the third umpire, Chettithody Shamshuddin, in India's innings, both of which went the home side's way. The first was a low slip catch by Ben Stokes from Shubman Gill in the second over and the next was a stumping attempt by Ben Foakes, against Rohit Sharma, who by that time had 53 to his name.

Shamshuddin gave both decisions not out after looking at only one camera angle of each incident. While the Stokes catch appeared to be the right decision - the ball seemed to have hit the ground - the Foakes stumping was a close call as Sharma looked to have his foot in the air very close to the time when the bails came off.

Even so, England's complaints were not necessarily about the decisions themselves but the speed at which they were given. In particular, the fact that Shamshuddin chose not to review any additional camera angles for either incident seemed to frustrate the tourists..

After the stumping decision had been given not out, Root could be heard on the stump microphones asking the on-field umpires for "consistency". Earlier in the day, during England's innings the third umpire had reviewed multiple angles and replays of a catch from Jack Leach before giving the left-hander out.

"The England captain and head coach spoke with the match referee after play," an ECB spokesperson said. "The captain and head coach acknowledged the challenges the umpires faced and asked respectfully that in making any decisions there was consistency in the process. The match referee said the captain was asking the right questions of the umpires."

Zak Crawley, the only bright spot for England on the opening day, admitted that the incidents had been "frustrating" for the tourists. "When we batted, Jack Leach had a similar one where it didn't quite carry and it seemed like they looked at it five or six different angles," he said.

"When we were fielding they looked at it from one angle. That's probably where the frustration lies. I can't say whether they were out or not out but I think the frustration was not checking four or five angles."

Perfectly valid response by the English. Third umpires' performance this series [Anil Chaudhary earlier] has been a total farce, double standards on display. For one side spending 5-10 minutes on the decision and looking at 5-6 camera angles again and again, for another side making decisions in 12 seconds without even asking for a 2nd angle, despite it looking close. Awful optics. Our umpires suck!!!!

Poms whining again ? Both decisions looked good to me. Stokes clearly grounded they made the fuss. Rohit feet was in as well. Rather than complaining about umpiring they need to play spin well and not bundle out.

Pommie crybabies know there's not much to complain about, but they are just making a play to ensure that the headlines for the first day talk less about their 38/8 collapse, their decision to play 1 inexperienced spinner on a dry turner, and decided to throw the journalists a bone with a manufactured 'consistency' controversy.

Even while watching it live, I felt that Shamshuddin was rushing through the decisions, though the stokes catch was a clear not out, Rohit's Stumping was far closer than it appeared to be and could have been looked into from many angles, including the stump camera. BCCI should invest in grooming a new generation of umpires, among the current lot, only Nitin Menon seems to be decent. Rest are old uncles, that you encounter in your daily life in local chai di dukaan.

What whining. Its completely legitimate to ask for some consistency here. Why is third umpire in such a hurry to give not out for Indian batsmen? Why wouldn't he check multiple angles to make sure? When you have a strong team especially at home, there's no reason to leave doubts in viewers minds like this. Even in last match, third umpire wouldn't check the full replay before giving rahane not out, he nicked the ball in rebound but he gives him not out before replaying that part. I would be pissed if this happened to india in a tour

ENG should be happy he cut the reviews short or they would get penalized even more points for slow overs.  On the Stokes drop, he only looked at one angle because it was damn obvious it wasn't a catch.  I hate when first angle shows something clear as day and they keep wasting time looking at all the other angles.

Good job 3rd umpire.

Both the teams bowled today and india was also pretty slow in overrate, partly because so many wickets fell. Another 5 minutes wouldn't have resulted in any fines for England

Shamsuddin is known for it:phehe:

England fans had also complained about him in one of the t20s in 2017 where he gave Root out LBW ( which was missing stumps) in last over as if was joining the appeal along with players, even that was awful & rushed decision.

Nah it wasn't missing but a huuuuuuge inside edge..  They lost the T20 series due to that..  After that DRS was brought into T20Is..

Shamsuddin is our version of Shakoor Rana:phehe:

Yup, just watched it again. There was an inside edge, England were cruising chasing sub-par score of 130.

The catch was not a catch it was a bump ball, but....

The decision's favouring the Indian team have definitely been rushed, in some cases it even looks like cheating.

It's a indictment on Indian umpiring.

I missed the bump catch one so can't comment but the rohit stumping one was embarrassing to say the least. That angle did not give any conclusive evidence. At least he should have checked all angles and then given his biased decision.
How can you be so openly biased? There is no defending that.

This was probably the case previous test, both decisions here were more than fair! Stokes clearly grounded it in the first replay & Rohit's decision took closer to 2 mins than 15 secs as claimed by the eternal whinging Poms!

Stokes catch was not clean. But Ro stumping was too close to hurry to a decision, needed more angles, especially from stump cam. If English umpires do something similar when we tour there, ICF will explode.
