Each day every player has to do 18 holes.

 

So in scoreboard the higher the negative number the better. For example if the leader on the score table shows -8, that means they have taken 8 less shots to complete the holes which they have done.

Imagine a tough hole has been set difficulty and at level where it must take 3 shots to complete that hole but Aditi Ashok completes it in 2 shots instead of three, then it is a birdie for Adiit Ashok, meaning she took one less shot

Very easy .. Golf is a game where there are 18 courses/holes. Each hole has a designated number of strokes associated with it - as in Par 3 means in general ppl should be able to put the ball into the hole from the starting points (tee) in 3 strokes. 

 

The point of the game is to pocket the ball into the hole in fewer strokes than allocated to the hole. If you score in 2 strokes instead of 3 in a par 3 - you get a -1. The lower the number the better you are doing. 

 

In the Olympics - they play 4 rounds (18 holes each day) and whoever manages to take the least # of strokes to pocket the balls in the hole wins. Right now 2 rounds are over (18x2 = 36 holes). Aditi Ashok has a score of -9 which means that she has used 9 fewer strokes than the expected (par) number of strokes to complete the rounds. 

 

The American lady was on -12 which means that she has used 12 fewer strokes to complete the holes she played.

 

If you score in 1 stroke fewer than the par for a hole - it is called a birdie (-1)

If you score in 2 strokes fewer than a par for a hole - it is called an eagle (-2)

If you score in 3 strokes fewer than a par for a hole - it is called a double eagle (-3) - Very rare

If you score in 4 strokes fewer - It is called an albatross (almost never happens)

 

If you score in the first shot - it is called a hole in one (Also rare - so on a par 3 hole you get a -2 as you scored in 2 shots fewer than the expected 3)

By the way the number of strokes for par associated with a hole depends on the distance of the hole (with the flag) from the starting point (tee) and the difficulty associated with the hole. There are danger elements on the course like a sand pit (called sand trap) or a water body (called a water trap) that can mess up your game. 

 

On a hole there are 2 main parts - the fairway and the rough. The fairway is the beautifully groomed area of the course where the grass is shaved like a carpet. The rough is the part around it. Usually the golfers will aim to remain on the fairway as the ball travels further after bouncing and it is easier to hit the ball on the next shot.

No there will be tie break if needed. 
 

Still 36 holes left, 18 tomorrow and 18 again later. Number of holes could change also as they are expecting hurricane. 
 

But long way to go. Aditi just needs to anchor the game tomorrow.

Complexities: knee injury last month in Russia (opponents may target his lower body); his is the most competitive weight category in Olympics freestyle wrestling. This prodigy from USA, Yianni (NCAA top dog) didn't make the Tokyo cut and he famously defeated Bajrang (then #1) in Beat the Streets couple of years back when he was a teenager (his freshman year). Now imagine what Bajrang is up against!!!!!

Not dissing a medal - but it would be nice to see someone go the distance - esp when you see countries like Bahamas, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Kosovo, Georgia have golds
