Playing 11 for the 4th test (The Oval)

This thread is only to discuss the playing 11. A positive for me is that the series is still in balance at 1-1. With two more tests to go, there is no dead rubber. The team selected here will likely play the next test too, baring a change here and there. Ind's focus would be on winning 1 test of the remaining two at least.

  • Top Order (1-3): Rohit, KL & Pujara. Everyone in the top order has played a couple of good knocks therefore time for them to utilize the experience from those innings in the last two games.
  • Upper Middle Order (4-5): Kohli and X. A weakness at the moment. Kohli as captain and Rahane as VC have guaranteed spots. Would like to see a Mayank or a SKY (in good form) given a shot in the last two tests.
  • Lower Middle Order(6-7): A mixed bag so far. Maybe Pant (wk) is due for a couple of good knocks. Jadeja has hit a few runs here and there but not sure if he can play a big inning. Maybe a Vihari, who can bowl too, can be brought in here.
  • Bowlers (8-11): I do not rate Indian spinners, used to making merry on rank turners, too high. If conditions favor seamers, which it should in Eng -Thakur, if he is fit and can swing the ball. Shami, Bumrah, and Siraj.
  • 12th man: Jadeja (if Vihari is playing) or Ashwin if a spinner is required per conditions

One area of improvement here is that guys supposedly in good form (based on previous series and formats including IPL) like Rohit and KL have failed to have a big series. If you are in good form, use it to have a big series.

Have to give ashwin a try specially for Root n those lefties now, whatever we trying isnt working so need to try something very different .

Root has done well against him so it ll be a challenger for ashwin too

Rohit, KL, Pujara, Kohli, SKY/Mayank, Jaddu, Pant, Thakur, Ash, Siraj, Shami

1. Rest Bumrah, he has a very hectic 2-3 months coming up and can use as much rest as he can get. he is absolutely vital for our wc hopes

2. Pujara most probably won’t be dropped, so nothing to talk about there

3. 50/50 w.r.t Rahane getting dropped, if he is, I would go with SKY/Mayank in place of him, can’t afford to have yet another liability in the field (Shaw) given we are already playing Pujara Ash and Shami. If Mayank plays KL and Mayank can swap places

4. Jadeja ahead of pant - Jadeja seems to have greater trust in his defensive technique compared to Pant at the moment, and Pant has usually played better with the tail as compared to Jaddu. So win-win all round

5. If the pitch is flat (witch it is most likely to be) we could use the batting depth of this line up since our batsmen have been in terrible form as off late

India should pick Mayank in their XI. They have been unfair and harsh on him. He has a career average of 45 in tests and you have guys like Rahane getting chances every match.

Mayank should be brought even if it means at no 5. I think he will play the old ball better.

Bring back DHONI

Best player of Swing bowling

Dhongi baba should have done a misbah and sticked to playing test cricket after the 2015 world cup until his early 40s. Would have done much much better with his... uhmm tight(?) technique.

But he did the complete opposite and kept playing test cricket in odis and T20s for 4 more years. :wall:

Mayank is a dead duck against any delivery with a hint of lateral movement.

1. Rohit

2. Shaw

3. Pujara

4. Kohli

5. Rahul

6. Pant

7. Ashwin

8. Shardul

9. Shami

10. Bumrah

11. Prasidh

.... Siraj looked tired and resting him for 1 match would be helpful for the team

.... The extra bounce of Prasidh can work in Oval.

.... Rahul at 5 would lend the much needed solidity in the middle order

Batting is extremely weak. Only someone like Vihari can replace Jadeja in the current form. Ashwin or Thakur are not good enough for top 7 in England - especially given the current form of Pujara and Kohli (possibly even Rahane if important people play) as well as lack of predictability of Pant's contribution.

But just curious - why Shaw over Mayank? He was a walking wicket in Australia and has only performed in white ball. Aren't you extrapolating his form from a wrong format? He didn't even play any tour matches in England.

I like the team as it is refreshed from the last test, however Kohli is too arrogant to change. Batting order rejigged and "new" bowlers like Ash, Shardul and Prasidh are introduced which may test the English batsmen.

For me the most crucial time of this test match is 30minutes before the start when the teams are announced.

If Kohli announces an unchanged lineup or the same batting lineup from 1-6, I will only follow the match if India get into a commanding position.
