Long Rope Club

The Realist

Recommended Posts

Tried to find the old Long Rope Club thread from the good old Dhoni test days but unable to do so.

Ishant Sharma and Rav Jadeja were founder members.

Pujara and Rahane are carrying on the proud tradition of always being selected despite having miserable stats. In the days when Aus dominated these two would not even get selcted into State teams yet Kohli has made them pillars of mediocrity.

KL needs admission to it asap on priority basis. :hitler:

Where you will find a top order cricketer with an avg of 33 in 58 Tests spread across an entire decade.

Last year in test cricket, he was our second best bat in Oz -

https://www.espncricinfo.com/records/series/batting-most-runs-career/border-gavaskar-trophy-2011-12-6636

And the second best bat in Eng as well -

https://www.espncricinfo.com/records/series/batting-most-runs-career/pataudi-trophy-2011-6112

Now the numbers aren't great for sure but they're nowhere near BRat or RGS bad

None of them did that, Kumble was pretty bad from Oz tour onward so 6-8 games well below par. Ashwin was our second worst spinner in the last year or so, Srinath retired once & then unretired because SCG asked him to, Dravid was doing pretty bad for 2-3 years away from home, except the one good tour of Eng, Same goes for SCG & probably Laxman. Yuvraj is probably the only one I'm partial to in the sense that I'd say he should've played the 2015 WC, but there were better players in the team at the time.

Kapil was chasing Hadlee's record, but he wasn't really playing poorly. His bowling average in his last few years was still in the 20s and batting average was in the 30s. It felt like a long time because we were mainly playing home matches at that time and he had little to do since the spinners were doing the bulk of the work.

Add Ravi Shastri, Dilip Vengsarkar

Tendulkar, yes. Last 2 years in Tests and quite a few years in ODIs. Worst part was when he was chasing his 100th 100 and we gave away so many matches/tournaments to make that happen.

Jadeja is still good in Tests

Dhoni - absolutely

Rohit Sharma - yes in Tests and to some extent in ODIs

Kohli - in all formats. He was done 5 years ago. Dragging his heel for far too long. Longest rope received of any Indian cricketer in history.

add Gavaskar to the list

Definitely not Yuvi. He was done a long time ago and should not have been picked for that World T20, which he screwed us in.

Ganguly - not quite. He dragged his career during his captaincy years. Even though, he had a late resurgence, it wasn't quite enough

Laxman was also fading towards the end of his career. Only Dravid retired at his peak in that generation of batsmen.

Vihari - not really. He got ample opportunities but he did not take them

Kishan - too arrogant, doesn't even want to play domestics.

Ankola - yes. Possibly, Kambli also. With some guidance, he could still have had a decent Test career

Which were the quite a few years Sachin had in ODIs? He averaged 54 in 2009, 208 in 2010 (including his iconic first 200), 46 in 2011 including crucial contribution to our world cup win (before that he averaged over 40 every single year since his injury in 2006)

Then he played half of 2012 and retired. So which were quite a few years in ODIs?

And what were these many tournaments and matches we gave away from Sachin? Last major tournament he played was world cup which we won.The only one he he is blamed for is the asia cup but we gave bangladesh a target of 290+ which they have never chased against a major team before that, kohli played slower than Sachin that innings.

Dhoni PR conveniently put the blame of not being able to defend 290+ against Bangladesh on Sachin. In fact that's still the second highest score bangladesh has ever chased against a non minnow.

In tests in the disastrous tour of Australia where we lost 4-0, he was still the second highest scorer for india just 13 runs behind kohli and had some crucial contributions even in last couple of years.

Struggling to remember which were the many years and many cups we suffered because of Sachin?

You could argue 1 year for tests and 6 months for ODI—the biggest issue for him post WC was the 100th ton! He should've gone to WI & completed that milestone ASAP. I'm pretty sure with that bit of less pressure and some practice before the Eng tour, he would've done much better there & maybe even in Oz.
