Virat Kohli suggested delayed start but ECB refused leading to cancellation: Report

Captain Virat Kohli is said to have conveyed on behalf of the Indian cricketers that an infection could show up in the next couple of days among the tourists - as the negative Covid-19 test results on the eve of the match were not a guarantee of an infection not germinating.

He reportedly suggested to the BCCI officials that the start of the match be postponed by two to three days.

 

Kohli also pointed out that with head coach Ravi Shastri down with Covid and several other members of the support staff likewise, India would have to enter a crucial Test without key off-field advisers and strategists and back-up officials, including physiotherapists.

Following the exchange, BCCI office-bearers spoke to England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) executives, proposing postponing the commencement of the game to Sunday or Monday. However, this could not be accommodated by the ECB.

Things just got more interesting.

 

Fellow ICFers, leave your personal likes/dislikes or opinion about Kohli aside and look at things objectively.

 

If this news is even partly true, that means India wasn't looking to avoid the test. 2-3 days postponement is a fine request if you look at the covid incubation period. 

 

All we have heard till now is from English media sources, mainly of the gutter variety like Daily Mail and The Sun. And of course ECB has launched a PR blitz in online space, backed by their naukars from Pak, and other BCCI/India/IPL haters.

 

Thoughts?

if the ecb refused it makes sense. 2 days loss is still 2 days loss for them and postponing the game - which anyway was not certain to go through - would have meant arranging for everything at the last minute.

Difficult to reschedule at a short notice ... Even if true, it could be like asking for something that is not likely to be considered.

Why did Bewda agree to a book signing event (a useless book to speak of) in the middle of the tests. Couldn't he have indicated he would do it after the tests were over? Once a Bewda, always a laoda.

I really dont understand how delaying by 2 days would have helped? If they were worried about becoming positive in 2 days, why are they now flying out in private and commercial airlines without waiting for some days?

Yes, this is puzzling. Werent they supposed to be in quarantine for 5 days in the UK? Why would they want to fly out to join their IPL teams if there is a risk of them testing positive over the next few days?

It is simple. If they get positive now, they will have to sit and do hard quarantine in UK. Now, they only have to do quarantine in UAE.

They are negative at present, so, they could fly out. They will do quarantine in UAE.

Yea but they could play too as they were negative at the moment. I will ask the same question, they were too afraid to play deapite being negative because some had covid.but not too afraid to fly and mingle with others for IPL?

They will get quarantined in UAE, not mingle.

They are traveling together on commercial planes

 

I thought the question was about their own fear and safety, not whether they will be away from IPL teams

The flight was a chartered one. No public allowed.

 

They were tested before boarding the fight ... tested negative ... travelled for a few hours ... were tested on arrival again ... tested negative ... will be quarantined again for 6 days.

 

If they played the test then ... tested negative before play ... someone turns positive within 5 days ( not a matter of a few hours or a day ) ... then the test match and our team will be in total disarray.

It was about moolah for ECB too. But for players, they aren't certain. All players who had close contact with physio. For them, it's better to quarantine in UAE then in England. UAE will have harder quarantine than in the botel they stayed. In this case If they don't get positive, they can play after quarantine.

 

Had they stayed in England, they still had to undergo quarantine in UAE.
