Vancouver
I would say - 1. Do not jump to conclusion after few innings and compare new players to legends of game. 2. Invest in really young players, no point in debuting 27-28 year olds. Always add age fudging in consideration. Otherwise shelf life of new player would be 5-6 years max. eg. Shreyas Iyer. 3. SR matters even in tests, Pujara was a burden on his team, his slow batting puts pressure on other batters to keep scoreboard moving. Such batting style gives an opportunity to opposition to regain the control. 4. Do not back players with glaring lack of ability if you truly believe your country is a batting talent powerhouse. Pujara would not survive in SENA. tweaker and express bowling 2 Link to comment
Prabhdeep Singh
For Test Cricket: 1) Always pick players that are cross format players, they are more skillful and have a higher ceiling. 2) Rohit Sharma should have played more test matches than Rahane, in future don't make similar mistake. An example of this could be picking Vihari over Gill. Gill should be the one given longer rope due to higher ceiling/potential. 3) Always pick players who have no issues against the short ball. 4) Develop left handed batsmen, too many right handers. 5) Pick a attacking number 3 (Gill) rather than a defensive number 3 (Vihari). We need to groom a bona fide high quality top order batsmen that can bowl 10 overs a day, just as a variety and to give other bowlers a break. Sundar can be this. We need also a better L/R batting lineup. Sundar and Pant help this a lot. We need a player at 3.4,5 that we can always rely on one of them to score a century. Sure this wont happen regularly, but it needs to happen more than once in 100 innings FFS. Gill, Iyer are two player to look at here. We need variety in our pace bowlers. Need also a leftie in there too. Natarajan is an option. Players that can bat and bat for long and bat quick enough for Test cricket. Those that know Ranji better than me, can find a player to meet these needs. I still believe India has the talent but do not pick the right players. @Vijy@express bowling express bowling, raki05 and tweaker 3 Link to comment
neel roy
That Indian selectors were maybe right in phasing off Gambhir Sehwag Laxman Jaffer Dravid. Or were they? As they gave us PuRane.. but again why do we look behind a sandwich packet when we buy it from supermarket.. to see its expiry date.. shelf life raki05 and Suhaan 2 Link to comment

I don't think we have a high quality left arm pacer in India, especially for test matches. We need a couple of tall hit the deck bounce bowlers to complement our shorter and skiddy pacers. waga
Pujara has been in there too long but don't forget he was India best batsman for years. The media always hyped up Kohli vs Australia but he never really did anything after 2015. no Pujara Australia win the border-gavasker 2018 and in India 2017 Link to comment
ShoonyaSifar
Pujara hasn't had a mediocre career. Was averaging 47-48+ till about 10 tests ago. That's excellent. But he should have been dropped from the team after first couple of tests in England. Rahane should have been dropped first in 2018 during the England tour and then again in the last England tour. But then if such performance standards were to be applied for Kohli, he should have been sacked and dropped from the team after the England tour as well. MechEng
Let's not bash Pujara and Rahane like that, they are people too an probably are going through low phase in their careers. Not to forget how both played crucial roles in winning in Australia. Let's hope both retire and remember all the great things they have done. Also note that batting talent in India is not that abundant that makes Pujara and Rahane easily replaceable, we are still living mentally in fab 5 era and thinking that a world class batsman will show up at anytime in India. tweaker
The lesson learnt was the team management was so adamant in continuing with Rahane and Pujara at the cost of someone who has just score a debut 100. Whenever there is an opportunity the team management always pick a player ,who is easily droppable. SRT100 and anish2tweet 2 Link to comment

International cricket is hard and not everyone will succeed since all have different limits to their abilities. Some cricketers are highly talented and with moderate amount of hard work they can achieve ATG status, while there are also some who very limited talent wise but have to work extremely hard to survive in international cricket and yet are not able to sort out their technical issues. The best we can do is to select most potent 11 and leave the rest to fate. Link to comment

Gill will be good on pacy pitches and Iyer in home conditions. I am one of the few who rate Sarfaraz quite highly but lack of Ranjis has stalled his development. An ugly, but effective, player - very comfortable against spin and decent enough against pace. We do not have people who "bat time" in Ranjis since the mode of batting has changed quite a lot. Some of the U19 batters look tuk-tuk with good technique (Rasheed), so perhaps they can push on. Lastly, Gaekwad deserves a go at some point, as does Shaw. Shaw, Gaekwad, Vihari/KLR (better at 3), Gill/Iyer, Sarfaraz, Sundar, Pant --> this would be a good top 7 in most conditions. SRT100 1 Link to comment

Sure he ended up being be able to continue that form, but just how much did the BCCI and TM contribute to this by dumping instead of rewarding him. Iyer's century should have rubber stamped him for the first test. Instead we went with a batsmen who was finished a few years back instead. Its demoralizing for the player and not to mention the fans. Link to comment
