Is Team India back to it's unsettled and chaotic status like the past? How to be optimistic?

I feel we are in a worse situation than we were in 2000 when Tendulkar quit captaincy or when we had the 2007 ODI WC debacle.

The biggest reason is that we do not have good (young and long term ) captaincy material in the team. I don't want to talk about KL. He just evokes disgust because of his woke mannerisms and pusillanimous body language. He is a mediocre/inconsistent performer & I do not think he is even an automatic selection in the side.

Rohit is almost over the hill & not a long term solution.

Unfortunately, Dravid too is not a dynamic individual or a street smart planner and executer.

I sort of feel gutted because I always felt the kind of talent we have, we should be gearing towards many many years of domination.

How far are we from having a settled Test batting team that will help us continue the domination like we did before the South Africa debacle?

How far are we from having a definitive  core group of match winners for the 2023 WC ?

Was it the right decision to have a would be 36/37 year old ( Rohit Sharma ) as captain for the 2023 home WC ?

What a total effing mess.

We are disgraceful in terms of how we totally lack planning for the future and how we squander resources and talent.

Even  tiny Sri Lanka with relatively meagre resources ( with a population 1/3rd of a single Indian state like Tamil Nadu )  with similar 3rd world problems is a 100 times better than us.

I do not have a very hard regard or awe for either Dravid as coach or Ganguly as BCCI head. They are both good in very limited roles but not as visionaries and contemporary cricket planners.

Quite frankly, what makes you feel optimistic in these times ?

India's golden period of test cricket is potentially over (I use the word "potentially" since anything can happen). Under Dravid, new selectors, and TM, we are: (1) relying too much on bunsens at home, (2) boosting support for trundlers home and abroad (look at avg bounce from shami, boom, etc this series), (3) continuously selecting over-the-hill players (purane, ishant), (4) failing to nurture next-gen pacers and spinners, (5) failing to back young, albeit incomplete, batting talents (e.g., gill, shaw, sundar), and the list goes on. I have a feeling that the Golden Age has come to an end, and we will now enter the Silver Age, and so on.

It comes down to if management have the guts to make big calls.

India has enough talent to do a smooth transition but time is running away too. You have to transition from Pujara and Rahane ASAP because 2-3 years later, there will be another transition in Indian cricket and that would be even bigger when Kohli, Rohit, Ashwin, Jadeja and Shami all will leave.

So, till that time, if India can find two world class middle order batsman, all is good then. If they don't, that's a problem.

It is optimistic if all of this bunch play for another 2-3 yrs. Some will be out in 1 to 1.5 yr I think.

They are Indian players so I am optimistic about them playing till late 30s.

The question could be if they would be good enough for 3 yrs or not. At the moment, Jadeja, Shami, Rohit and Ashwin( except SA series) are good enough and would want to see more of Kohli with bat now that he has resigned from captaincy to make a judgement on him.

Also fitness - this is an issue for Shami and Rohit.

Not grooming younger players, and continuing with players who have lost ability, is the biggest problem with Indian cricket now.

Even our much talked about pace attack has just 3 pacers who have current ability ... Bumrah, Siraj and Shami.  (  Ishant and Umesh are done but are being persisted with and no new pacers are ready to take over as they have not been given chances against weaker teams )

Please don't compare this situation with SRT's, the moment SRT left captaincy it was a humongous moment for India as Ganguly took over and SRT was the worst captain in the history of mankind. The guy wasn't meant to be a leader at all.

On the other hand Kohli retires as the GOAT ASIAN test captain, his place would be very difficult to fill. Especially considering that there are no alternatives like Ganguly/Dravid.

Rohit is the only choice but even he is 35.

Indian Team will get stronger and play more dominating cricket as long as BCCI doesn’t gives one player all the power, just because he happens to be best recognized batsman of the time

As of now we don't even have the best batsman in the world and actually there's no one who comes close even to top 5.

The last one was Kohli.

A leader who has passion for Test cricket. KL Rahul being a captain is not a good sign.

He'll be puppet for the other Rahul. It might work out if they fix the middle order and keep adding the pacers.

Honestly captaining the current Indian team is quite easy as long as they select players based on current form

Rohit is real leader and comes out passionate towards playing and winning tournaments and series.  IMO he is best stopgap skipper and will bring in right talent tillnext permanent skipper  is appointed.

My only issue with Rohit is his chemistry between him Pant and Kishan. He may start favouring his IPL team mate. Hope I am prooven wrong

nah that won't be an issue. Only issue is his fitness and availability in all 3 formats

Agree, Rohit is definitely too chubby to lead and play all three formats without reaching out for extra  vadapaav and jalebi. So he will be in rush to find his replacement.

Easy to say that in hindsight. People didn't know of Ganguly's potential as captain. Imagine if he turned out to be a bigger flop than Tendulkar.

The same way we do not know the potential of whoever the next captain is going to be. Not in favour of KL Rahul as captain but one match can't define the rest of your career.

Your GOAT captain has made sure that Indian cricket is in doldrums due to no succession planning... Only if he had the foresight to develop backups for everyone, all of us including your GOAT captain would be happy

Only problem is KLR doesnt have experience of captaining at Ranji level nor does his IPL captaincy stint inspire.. Need to wait & watch for an year to see where Indian cricket is headed. Only solace is the fact that both Saurav Ganguly & Dravid are 2 passionate individuals heading Indian cricket and we can hope for a better tomorrow
