He used to bat very slow as opener. He became a dashing middle order batsman only from the 96 QF onwards. In theory it is possible he was paid to slow it down in this game, but he wasnt a prominent player in the team. Someone would have to pay him to overperform at that time, not under!
Number Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 (edited) I don't think very slow batting by opening batsmen against good attacks was abnormal those days. https://m.cricbuzz.com/live-cricket-scorecard/5869/ind-vs-aus-4th-odi-australia-in-india-odi-series-2001 Look at Ganguly's score This while chasing ~340 so it was a patta wicket. "Selfish" Sachin playing at 160 SR even in 2001. Bigg Brother and Number 2
deepdynamo Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 Ajay Jadeja used to be a slow opener but you can't deny hint of match fixing in the 90's. I remember one more of his inning 20(80) in Sahara cup 1998. SRT100 1

Ganguly was a very average ODI batsman...his SR is poor even by 90s standards considering he was a regular opener putrevus, diehardpacer and Lord 2 1

He was a top ODI player during his prime. Especially for a few years around 2000, when he was arguably the best in the world in ODIs. Had extremely horrible form after the 2003 WC due to which his stats took a beating. Even then his career SR is same as Kallis, Inzamam.
AuxiliA Posted December 11, 2022 Posted December 11, 2022 Nothing fishy here. Such slow innings used to be common during the 90s.

He might have had a peak, but overall in category of those mentioned and hence overrated diehardpacer 1

Before 2003 he was a genuine match winner on his day and a super consistent ODI batsman. Used to be a handy medium pacer as well. nevada 1

As mentioned above, he could get stuck and his SR was low for someone batting in field restrictions. Most openers even in that era had better SR. Was a good captain and handy bowler, but just as a batsman he was more hype than substance diehardpacer 1

His downfall started when he became captain, slightly later you could argue with that 2001 series vs Oz. Then he moved down the order to accommodate Sehwag at the top & his number took a beating! Of course peak SRT was better than peak SCG but there's one more thing that led to his downfall in LO cricket, I'll let you guess what it was.

Used to caress offside deliveries to the boundary and hit massive sixes off spin with great footwork and timing. Boycott used to go gaga in the commentary box over "Prince of Calcutta" every time he sent the ball to the offside boundary. People look at averages to downgrade batsmen but fail to appreciate the quality of their batsmanship. AuxiliA 1

Was a good captain and handy bowler, but just as a batsman he was more hype than substance Till 2003, he had a strike rate close to 75. It was after 2003 that his weakness became more apparent and was struggling for shots. http://howstat.com/cricket/Statistics/Players/PlayerYears_ODI.asp When compared with Dravid, Ganguly and Azharuddin both scored faster. Dravid because he batted at 4-5, he would have to forcefully accelerate sometimes(after the 40th over) and hence ended up with strike rate of 73. Further adding to it, if you look at their career strike rate till 2003, Ganguly was at 75 and Dravid was at 69. But since then Ganguly was past it and retired with strike rate of 73. Dravid improved his strike rate in mid-2000s and took it to 71. Edited December 11, 2022 by Majestic Adding more points

(15 overs those days) Dravid's role was to stabilise the innings and hit in end v reverse swing prominent then. Yet similar avg and SR. diehardpacer 1
