Sachin meets Kambli,latter holds firmly his childhood friend

On a parallel note, a shout-out to SRT here.  For many fans he is still the be all and end all of batting.  For those of his time like me, he’s God and always will be. 
 

But here he is paying homage to his guru Achrekar’s memory, in a setting that (look at it from various angles in the few videos out there) that very ‘down market’, low key, and away from the five star flash of IPL.  He showed up, and that’s character.

SRT did get him a coaching job in his academy but Kambli left it as it was too far for him to travel.

I have always been a huge Kambli fan. Even in 1989 when SRT debuted, I felt (correctly or not, I don't know) that they both should've debuted together. I love the feel-good, underdog-success stories - and Kambli exemplified that. He reached the pinnacle of cricket and that alone is commendable. He did what 99.999999% of India wants to do, but can't. So, kudos to him! He will always be 2nd to SRT, but most people are well below that, so there is no shame there.

 

In the video posted above, he is wearing a mask but his face in uncovered. Now, he may be protecting himself from others, but he may also be ill.

 

Covid and post-Covid, when I see a hanging mask, I keep physical interaction as minimal as possible. Wonder if SRT had the same instinct. Later, VGK is seen actually wearing his mask and standing next to SRT and patting him, and SRT is not moving away.

Kambli looks like he's in 80s and not 50s! He looks like Tendulkar's dad. Sad to see him in this condition.

Got him a coaching job at some Navi Mumbai academy which he didn't go to after a while because it was too far away. Kambli keeps saying that Sachin didn't help him but short of taking him in and giving him fat handouts I'm not sure what more he could've done. He still gets a pension of sorts for being a former player but last 2 yes his health has dropped off a cliff, despite the alcoholism he wasn't this way even as recently as 2022 where he was able to stand on his feet and talk coherently.

Johpda is a scam artist, although he did get better with his English & in general on TV persona—he, of course, took the YT route as well, which is where a lot of "new age" retired cricketers are going! Jhopda was also extremely lucky that after he retired, IPL was already the biggest comp in cricket, and there was a ton of money in India itself. The amount of money & opportunities between when Kambli retired vs. AK is at least 10-20x. The point about Kambli losing out on his own fortune is right, though. He wasn't disciplined enough & kind of like Shaw in that regard.

Meh, the only thing that's down market is people's minds—we come from this land/soil & all of us will end up in the same place. Anyone being too proud of their "wealth" should always remember that

Several examples of sportsmen/rappers/celebs emerging from poor background/ghetto, with loads of talent, who couldn't handle fame, money. So many elite athletes even from the West who are now broke, because of lack of discipline, bad habits....Boris Becker who even recently was Djokovic's coach landed himself in jail. 

 

In Kambli's case, double whammy of class and caste (Dalit). 

 

SRT came from a middle class, upper caste family, well respected, his father was an intellectual, Marathi poet/writer. Educated mom, and his elder brother Ajit shielded him, supported him, even sacrificing his career in the process. Kambli probably didn't have such a strong support/guidance system around him.

Sachin did give Kambli a lot of chances when he was captain. 100+ ODIs is a large enough sample size, can't keep blaming others.

Sachin obviously would have talked more, but he had to take his seat in an event, hence he let Kambli's hand go. Even the person sitting next to Kambli signalled Sachin to move away, perhaps recognizing that Kambli may do or say something inappropriate. 

 

Kambli perhaps must be feeling bit emotional and left out, he may look at Sachin and think what life he could have been for him had he not wasted it.

 

Anyway, this should be a lesson for many young cricketers, youth can't be wasted. Those days when you feel you can own the world is the best time to make for it. Once the health starts deteriorating, its a point of no return.

More than that, I'd argue once you're in a relatively well-off position, don't let go of discipline! You can't tell me he became wealthy without being a good cricketer; for that he needed to have at least some discipline, even if in the early stages. You can neglect many things in life, although you should not, but discipline is something that can never be compromised

I read he went to rehab 13 times.  He probaly had many chances to course correct himself. He failed to do.

He was but without knowing the context of what he said or say the history between them in the recent past it's hard to judge them ether way, & even then you can't judge people from your PoV assuming you could've done things differently.

No one can help man.. I am sure all of us have school friends who failed in several next life stages and out of blue want help in ours mid life’s. It’s sad.

I feel for Kambli but he has only himself to blame. He was very talented but did not have the discipline to succeed at the highest level. When Kambli burst into the Test scene in early 90's he had an amazing start. The 1994/95 series against WI put his Tests career at risk as he struggled against short pitched stuff. Still I feel that he should have played more Tests as he was brilliant against spin. He continued to be part of the Indian white ball team though till late 90's. I still remember he made an effective comeback in 1998 in a Tri Series at home against Australia and Zimbabwe. He was one of the top scorers in that series. In the final league game he was rested as India had already qualified for the finals but he twisted his ankle coming in to field as a sub and missed the final which India lost. That kind of ended his ODI career as well. He played a few times after that but was never the same. His career ended with that embarrassing 54 all out game in LOIs against Sri Lanka. He fell off the wagon after that. Even during his prime in the 90's he had lots of issue discipline wise and even during the era of limited media we heard a bit about it. He wasn't as committed as Sachin towards cricket. His health deteriorated progressively due to his carefree days when he was young. 

 

He was an excellent talent who could have been our main stay in the 90s and early 2000s but he did not work hard enough on his game like Sachin did. Cricket is not all about talent, you need to have the will to improve and succeed as it is not easy to be at the top for the time of your career.
