Terrible state of Indian fast bowling, future looks bleak

India should never pick a fast bowler that was discarded earlier. This should be their mantra going forward . So bringing back Mukesh, Unadkat, Thakur even Shami should not be done. You bring in fresh blood and see how they go. If they don't work move on to next set of bowlers. Don't go back to discarded bowlers. This is the mistake that is stalling us from developing fast bowlers.

There is a big dilemma amongst the selectors.

They pick a player, based on his domestic numbers. More often than not, those numbers dont translate well in international cricket.

Vinay Kr, B Kr, Unadkut, Mukesh there are so many of them. They are at best 3rd or 4th pacer but not at all capable of leading an attack.

Domestic teams fails to see beyond the stats and pick a pacer who is quick enough for most conditions. IPL is the wild card which may give opportunity to some unknown faces...else there is zero exposure.

Most of the pitches in domestics too are low bounce and slow..hence just being accurate is enough to survive the beating for trundlers and spinners.

That's why i do not watch domestic tournaments. Millions of them. Look  at the T20 tournaments going on. Every state having one. It might help get some batsmen for shorter formats but certainly no bowlers for longer formats. Hit and giggle domestic tournamensts are a joke !

Gambhir interview

"We will have to give them time," Gambhir said. "Earlier, we used to have four fast bowlers in the squad with an experience of more than 40 Tests. It doesn't make such a big impact in one-day or T20 matches, but when you go to Australia, England, or South Africa for Tests, experience matters.

"These are early days. If we start judging our bowlers after every Test, how will we develop a bowling attack? Outside Bumrah and [Mohammad] Siraj, we don't have that much experience, but they [the others] have quality, which is why they are in this dressing room. But we have got to keep backing them because it's not about one tour. It's about building a fast-bowler battery that can serve India for long time in Test cricket."

I am all for building pace unit for long term by giving opportunity. But if you are looking at long term you should be backing guys who are in their early 20s not late 20s. You can't build anything with that.

True. How can you build fast bowling battery for future by picking 29-30 year olds! Siraj is already a depreciating asset. His experience has done nothing on Australia tour and now ineffective in England. It was his second tour to Australia on really helpful decks there.

They need to identify bowlers in 22-25 age group to groom for future. Ishant, Shami, Umesh were all picked early.

Also need to back guys instead of chop and change. Paddikal Reddy Sundar Harshit played in Aus but not here

Situation is extremely alarming & there are no short term fixes.

We need someone like Rob Key who could look beyond the numbers & has his own eye test about what kind of Pacers India is specifically looking at.

I'd make a pool of guys like Kamboj (keeping NZ tour in mind) Simarjeet Harshit & perhaps even keep Kaverappa in the mix who can hit to oof off stump line fairly consistently while not dropping his pace to low 130's.

Simarjeet should be a pet project.  Perhaps best outswing pacer we have at high pace.. like Steyn used to have.

There is something Cummins has seen in him when he called him X factor pick before the IPL season.. even if ultra flat T20 pitches didn't suit him.

Kaverappa and kamboj bowls mainly in high 120s to low 130s. Not good enough to trouble international batters.

After the departure of Bhuvi, Umesh & Ishant and with Shami on last legs, we don't have a battery of fast bowlers anymore.

Bumrah is elite.

Siraj is at best a third support fast bowler but is forced to do a job as 2nd elite fast bowler.

Then there is long gap.

Mukesh was tried for 3 tests then discarded.

Harshit, same -- 2 test and discarded.

Akashdeep - tried for 7 tests - again in & out.

Prasidh -- 5 tests but not impressive and will be left out.

Arshdeep & Kamboj are the current hyped uncapped test prospects.

In short, nobody is being given a fair run.

I'll keep them in the mix above likes of Avesh Mukesh types.  Someone like Kamboj who can also slog can be vital in next year NZ tour.

Arshdeep may turn out to be a waste of time given his limited FC exposure.  Left arm Pacers need to be around 140k to succeed in Test cricket.

As soon as Shaheen started trundling he became useless.

Starc and Jansen are the only sucessful left arm quicks operating and they are quick.

We had high hopes from Tyagi,Mavi,Umran and latest Mayank but all had stunted to terrible growth infact they got derailed due to poor fitness, priorities, guidance, exposure

Had all stayed fit and did well we would have been in much better position

Even two of them had transformed our attack

Probably... But in the case of Kamboj he bowls that consistent line and length, can be probing which is more than you can say about Prasidh. At least keep pressure on as third pacer ..And in English conditions Kamboj will get seam movement

this thread is an understatement, indian bowling including spin is in a tailspin the likes of which we have not seen in a while.this is all on BCCI- despite unlimited funds they have neglected our bowling in favor of IPL  nonsense and it's marketing.
