rangeelaraja Posted March 19 Posted March 19 (edited) https://www.espncricinfo.com/records/most-sixes-in-career-284025 From a: 6s/ innings ratio perspective....no one is even remotely close. Even traditional "hitters" like Mcullum, Afridi, Gayle...or anybody else. I remember being in AWE of Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting .....and their ability to hook and pull with consummate easy. SRT was never a very convincing hooker/puller. At times he would play that hook that he played of Andy Caddick in the 2003 WC that went for a massive 6. And then at times he would sky the ball in a hook attempt against Mcgrath- like he did the 2003 WC finals. It never looks controlled. But Rohit is leagues ahead of even Gilchrist and Ponting in his ability to get into a position to execute a hook/ pull for 6 with a almost superhuman ability. Don't like him for a few things off late, but Hitman is a beast with his 6 hitting ability - he is not physically strong like Yuvi, just insanely talented with timing. Vancouver Posted March 20 Posted March 20 From enjoyment perspective, I loved Ganguly and Sidhu's sixes. Sidhu tamed both Murali and Saqlain, Sehwag put the final nail. Tendulkar was great before tennis elbow. He thrived on short pitch bowling on bouncy pitches, Sachin's batting in 90s had flair. See highlights of his innings in Caribbean. Afridi, Gayle, UV, Kapil are all tall guys. They were strong athlete's with long levers. Rohit is in mould of Anwar, effortless elegance. Kapil will forever remain India's most supreme cricketing athlete. IMHO game has changed, no question Rohit is best six hitter for last 10 years. I believe Jayasuriya would have gone bezerk with newer bats and shorter boundaries. Also Peterson's sixes off against ATG OZ side will be forever etched in my memory. New guy 1
Vilander Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Hyperbole no one is leagues ahead of anyone else. Rohit is not a very high strike rate batter. So yup nope..he is not greatest.
Tillu Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Nobody hits Sixes as effortlessly as Rohit does in limited overs cricket. One of the top 2 pullers/hookers of the cricket ball ever. He's not a great six hitter in Test matches though. He always gets out trying to hit sixes in Test matches. raki05 1
putrevus Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Rohit is the most consistent and best biggest hitter in cricket history. He is also most effortless. Gayle is most powerful and if Viv played he would be the best. raki05 and AuxiliA 2
neel roy Posted March 20 Posted March 20 I still remember Rohits 2 absolutely gobsmacking sixes in one of the super overs in one of t20s. I mean we needed 10 off 2 balls and he nonchalantly hits 2 sixes against Southee.. raki05 and BacktoCricaddict 1 1

Sachin was an excellent backfoot player and was only Indian batter in the early 90's who did not mind short pitched stuff. There is a reason he did very well in Australia and SA. Yes I agree though as Rohit is the most effortless six hitter in modern day cricket.

Sharma 637 sixes in 532 innings = 1.19/innings Afridi 476 sixes in 508 innings = 0.93/innings This inspite the fact that Afridi is a slogger averaging in low 20s ( not a proper batsman ) nevada, neel roy, raki05 and 1 other 1 3

But they took some time to realize their potential, once they had better understanding of their game. Afridi, sadly, found success with this approach at the start and then just tapered off. Can never optimize the potential he had, same goes for Imran Nazir. Afridi could have taken the learning from Sehwag, who too can play at a breathtaking pace but with decent consistency. raki05 1

Siddhu tamed Murli when he was just another ordinary off spinner. Sehwag tamed Murli when he had developed all the tricks like doosra with chucking. Pre-2000 Murli isn't same as after he learnt doosra. raki05 and putrevus 1 1

He would be among the greatest t20 players. His bowling was perfect for t20s. Anything he gave with bat was a bonus. Odis and tests , he had severe limitations as a hitter, those formats need more consistency. First class 1

Thread is not about could hit sixes. It's about greatest in hitting sixes. Why do you hit sixes ? To score runs. For some section of Indian fans stats are in itself a different game lol so funny. Faster and more runs means better probability of wins*. So nope Rohit is not the greatest 6 hitter if you consider difficulty of match situation and six hitting to score runs. (not that he might not be one of, that's why I said hyperbole to call him the greatest). The greatest means something outside of Indian fandom, it's a loaded term.
Vilander Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Just now, Aiden said: No body comes close to Afridi. He started the trend Thead is not about starting trend but being the greatest , issue is the subjectivity of how each of us define the greatness. Btw did people not hit sixes before afridi ? ,based on small thing like facts that might be a wrong assertion but don't let that spoil it for you.
