Kohli has long long way to go just to be mentioned amongst Tendulkar.

I can understand fans getting excited, but plenty of idiot pundits & ex-cricketers making lame comparisons.

Let's put aside Tendulkar's Test performance aside (monumental), Tendulkar is greatest ODI batsmen.

Not to take digs at Kohli, but Tendulkar's ODI World Cup record is incredible, Kohli went missing in 2015 World Cup.

And Tendu's record as an opener (his prime position) is phenomenal, batting first or chasing.

How did he go missing in 2015 world cup, he did score 100 and he played well enough but not to the Kohli standard but he did well, his partnership with Gambhir in 2011 was instrumental in India winning that match after losing both openers so early.

You have to remember he was playing non stop for 4 months in Australia leading India in tests.

Stats may back Virat in LOIs but people need to remember that Tendlya had to play with a posse of fixers (including our captain at that point) during his prime in the 90s; and he still won us games. Virat doesn't have that burden.

It is for the above reason why Tendlya is in a place of his own. His on-field performance is just part of the phenomenon. There is a reason why Virat idolizes him.

Then you'd be completely and utterly incorrect.

That's your opinion. As far as I'm concerned your view of Tendulkar being ahead of Dhoni and Kohli in LOIs is incorrect.

Tendulkar is still better than Kohli in odis ,Kohli is the better chaser and finisher though,an absolute beast and GOAT perhaps. The reason I say tendulkar still being better than Kohli is because of the era they played in,Kohli basically is a post 2010 player ,now if a peak tendulkar debuted in 2010 like virat ,he would have averaged 50+ as an opener in this pathetic flat pitch era, have no doubts about it.

We are praising Kohli right now and the way he chases is out of the world but who knows 15 years down the line we might find another Kohli who might chase even better due to the evolution of the game and we'd diss on the current Kohli lol that's how fans behave!!

Virat went missing in two QFs (2011, 2015) and two SFs (2011,2015). He needs to rectify this.

He doesnt have as stellar a record in ICC tournys as SRT.

This is for people who compares Sachin with Virat in ODIs :

BETWEEN 1990 TO 2012 (SINCE SACHIN STARTED TO PLAY IN TOP ORDER TO HIS RETIREMENT) :
Sachin scored 15310 at average of 48.30 with 45 centuries and 75 half centuries ( 120 fifty plus scores)
IN MOST RUNS : Jayasuriya with 12740 Runs at 34.31 average. Sachin has almost 2800 Runs more.
IN HIGHEST AVERAGE : Mathew Hayden with 44.30 average (Min 4000 runs cut-off). Sachin averages more by 4.
MOST HUNDREDS : Sanath Jayasuriya with 28 Hundreds. Sachin has 17 more.
MOST FIFTIES : Sanath Jayasuriya with 66 fifties . Sachin has 5 more.
MOST 50+ SCORES : Sanath Jayasuriya with 94 while sachin has 120.

In short : Sachin was NUMBERONE in Highest runs, Highest averages , Most 100s, Most 50s in his generation.

SINCE VIRAT'S DEBUT TO TILL DATE ( JUN 2008 TO MARCH 2016) in MIDDLE ORDER:
Virat scored 7212 at average of 51.51 with 22 centuries and 36 half centuries ( 61 fifty plus scores)
IN MOST RUNS : Sangakara is at top with 7891 runs at 48.41 average. Virat is at number 2.
IN HIGHEST AVERAGE : AB devillers is at top ( 64.09) followed by MS Dhoni (55.12) and Hashim Amla (52.36) Virat Kohli is at No.4
MOST HUNDREDS : Hashim Amla is at No.2 with 22. Virat is has 3 more.
MOST FIFTIES : Sangakarra has 51 fifties. Virat is at No.2 with 36 fifties.
MOST 50+ SCORES : Sangakarra has 69. Virat is at No.2 with 61.

In short : Virat is NUMBER_ONE in centuries, NUMBERTWO in most runs, most half centuries and most 50= scores and NUMBERFOUR in Batting average in his generation.

Summary : Sachin dominated almost all aspects of Batting for 20 Years of Career ( with injuries and 4 major surgeries, change of playing style, best bowling attack, bigger grounds, no power plays of most of career , and old age after crossing 30 yrs after 2004) more than Virat has done in his peak form or sporting age.

Viv Richards was better batsman in ODI than sachin ever was but he was considered a monster and no body could imagine to bat like him so nody followed his ruthless way of batting. But Sachin made his batting which was not less destructive than Viv's look like achievable by Humans. He almost changed the ODI batting philosophy with beauty & grace.

Its early to compare Sachin who had a 24 Year long career with Virat whose cricketing career started just 8 years before. With age performance is bound to go down due to injuries, sport fatigue and slowing of reflexes. Sachin of 2000s was best in world but never good than Sachin of 1990s. Same will happen with Virat. He is right now as good as Sachin of 2000s and by no way he can better Sachin of 1990s after 10 years.

Sachin was opener, he had to adjust to pitches and face most deadly bowlers in opposition first hand. Wasim or Mcgrath with new bowl on unmanipulated wicket is 100 times difficult than facing the best bowler of today's generation after getting clear idea of wicket ( Since Virat comes at No.3 or No.4).

Also its funny Sachin was a opener and his job was to give good start and momentum , build innings in most cases but he is blamed that he didnt finished the game like Virat did who is a mid order batsman and his job is to build inning and finish the game.

Sachin was better batsman , better timer and better placer of Ball than Virat. Only thing where Virat excels is his capability to withstand pressure but who knows with more match winners in team, weaker bowling attacks, power plays , less incorrect dismissal decisions due to technology and batting favouring conditions like today Sachin could have been better player in pressure too.

Conclusion : Virat is better player in pressure matches that too marginally,  Sachin is better player in all other aspects of batting miles ahead of Virat.

Stats can't show the whole picture. Even if Virat manages to go past Tendulkar in terms of stats,he still won't be past tendulkar in terms of greatness.

Tendulkar played in a different time,Kohli plays in a different time. Batting has become more easier then ever. Sachin's impact on Indian cricket is huge. Virat still hasn't made that huge a impact. Sachin defined Indian cricket. Virat is following his footsteps.

I agree Virat is the best chaser we have ever had/ will have.

In 2011, Virat had not matured as a batsman.

It is almost impossible to compare batsmen of two different eras. It becomes even more difficult when one has finished a long career and another has been playing tests for less than 5 years.

But batting statistics is not the only parameter that defines the greatness of a batsman.

The best player, in my opinion ,  is.......which batsman in his best years  were the opposition teams more afraid of......which batsman would they rather not have playing against them, in crunch matches and important series and tournaments.  This fact is not easy to know.

Another parameter could be....suppose you were the captain of team India ( hypothetically )  who wants to win every match desperately........which batsman would you choose for crunch matches and important series and tournaments  ?  ( If it is hypothetically possible to choose only one among Kohli or Tendulkar ) . There could be separate choices for tests and LOIs.

If I were the captain of team India ( hypothetical scenario )  then...based on the impression I have till march 2016...I would choose Tendulkar for test matches and Kohli for LOIs.

Note that factors such as most runs, 100s, etc. depend upon number of innings played. For e.g. Ponting has both more runs and 100s than Bradman  .... Averages depend up on not outs, surfaces played on, opposition played, etc. :winky:

Don't forget, if at all we come to a stage where tendulkar and kohli are considered equally great, kohli will prevail because of his aggressive fielding and captaincy.

We have to agree that SRT failed as a captain and was moderate in the field. Kholi's intent and attitude as a captain can be huge for a team. SRT failed to do so. He was relatively more passive.

Many of the Sachin bhakts have been attacking batsmen from Bradman to Lara :rotfl: .... Enjoy Kohli's batting, he is doing it for Ind

Luckily for cricket fans, the torch of great batting is passed on from one generation to another i.e. Bradman -> Sobers -> Richards and Gavaskar -> Lara and Tendulkar -> Kohli and Others

In the end, only Bradman will live on because of his freakish average of 100. Even those who don't follow cricket know about Bradman because of his stats which are considered as remarkable achievements for top performers in any sport. History shows that others have come, shone, gone and then taken the back seat to support the incumbent(s)

PS Don Bradman

PPS

"The test career batting average of Australian cricketer Sir Donald Bradman of 99.94 runs per innings is one of the most famous and iconic sporting performance statistics in history."
