So when Sachin, Dravid, Laxman were abused for hanging on for too long by Dhoni fans you never had a problem. But when people are genuinely concerned about Dhoni overstaying you do? Even now some people are bragging about how Dhoni got rid of seniors

There is no love of Indian cricket here, just blind Dhoni devotion by some

Dhoni certainly didnt overstay ..

Dhoni hasnt overstayed, he is still fit making runs and a huge asset behind stumps.

those guys became liability in every dept.

He has definitely started on the right note. Hope he can stay that way for the next 5-6 years that he may be captain. Even Dhoni showed great captaincy early on until he became stubborn one day and remained as such.

For this reason I think there should be term limits on captaincy. People become jaded after a while.

All captain looks good at home. Let him step outside the sub continent and then we will see.

In terms of Indian captains, I rank them in following order:

MSD

Wadekar

Ganguly

Kapil

Azharuddin = Kohli

No one here is saying Kohli is best captain but he has shown willingness to adapt  according to conditions. It is that willingness has earned him 4 overseas test wins.yes he needs to win away tests but if he does not win he does not become bad captain.

His team fought hard in Australia , the way they fought back after losing first test in SL shows something about his leadership.

What is he doing then in T20s then. He is not a best keeper for T20s period.

Expect people with common sense can see a hell lot of difference between a captain following the same blind motion match after match and a captain who is actually interested in developing teams long term and make sure our bowlers are better every test

Dhoni has been a liability in T20 for years now, particularly in captaincy, what are you even talking about. Have you seen Rahul's stats in his last year in test?

How is that even related to supporting india ? I said RCB chocks alot in ipl and he is a  captain.  So i highlight something negative there.. you cry about it.. amount on moaning you do about dhoni and few others you are a pakistani supporter according to that logic. Keep your kohli chamchagiri to yourself.  When did i even wish for anything lol pulling random crap out of blue.

You're an idiot. You wait and wait and wait and as soon as kohli fails a bit you latch on to the opportunity and celebrate when India loses. Keep IPL out of it. I dont give a shit what happens there. Not a kohli chamcha even remotely. I have criticized Kohli in the past and will continue to do when it's right. That's what separates from dhoni chamchas who can see no wrong. Support the team once in a while.

Dhoni was a horrible test captain who clearly didn't enjoy or understand test cricket, he'd rather be motorcycling in Ranchi than battling in the heat of a test match in Colombo. His successes came when India had one of the best batting lineups of all time and following the demise of great Australian team. Indias high test ranking under him was largely off the back of home victories....big deal, we've always been good in tests at home. Away from home, Dhoni was clueless. His highlights away from home were beating Windies and NZ 1-0 and drawing 1-1 with RSA and SL. He had no idea how to set fields and apply pressure, often placing fielders for the 'bad ball'. FFS, this is test cricket, wickets win matches not containment of runs. Shows he didn't understand the basics. No wonder we got mullered 4-0, 4-0, 3-1 under his expert leadership. He once bunked a test tour to Sri Lanka so he could rest, India rewarded him with test captaincy. Leader has to set an example, Kohli fits the bill because he is an orthodox cricketer with a passion for test cricket

Errrr guys stop fighting. Viper and me dont hate Kohli...lol. We support him as much as anyone does. But lets face it...its too early to judge him as a captain. Didnt Dhoni lost a single test match for first 3 years? Then we saw what happened moment we stepped outside Sub continent in 2011. Not saying Kohli will fail too but lets wait to hail him as a great skipper.

But what we Dhoni fans do not agree is the constant criticism he gets on this forum. That dude has possibly won every possible cup for us, still a fanstastic man manager and a decent no.4 LOI bat. Of course he lost his power hitting he used to possess once but he is still pretty handful. He retired from test cricket already, let him focus on LOIs. Why such a rush to force him to retire? He is only 34 and lets be honest he is not such a big liability as Sachin was during his last couple of years.

Even I am not a great fan of having different skippers in different format. But MS is too precious a cricketer to let go. Just be patient and Virat will surely lead us one day in all formats.

I certainly disagree that Dhoni was never a good Test captain. If you look at his predecessor Kumble's record as Test captain, you will see that Kumble wasn't winning consistently at home. There were many draws and we even lost to South Africa when Kumble was captain. Dhoni changed that and got us winning more consistently at home.

We were 0-1 down against SA, Dhoni captained the next Test, we won and drew the series.

Against Aus, out of the 4 Tests that we played, Kumble captained in two and both were drawn. Dhoni captained in two and we won both.

Dhoni still has a great record at home. Dhoni's captaincy just nose-dived after that England tour where we got beaten black and blue. In the subsequent tour of Aus, I felt Dhoni hit rock bottom in his captaincy career and should have got fired then and there. Problem is Dhoni got so mentally and physically drained captaining the team in all formats along with keeping and batting and captaining CSK, the constant hounding by the press, etc. that all his creative juices got dried up and he was left with zero innovation and same drab strategies and no flexibility. There is a high risk that Kohli might follow a similar path if he is given captaincy of all formats too.

One of the solutions to this problem is having separate captains for separate formats. That will let each captain just focus on one area and also increase longevity for each captain. It will also create a good competitive environment where one individual is not dominating the cricket landscape. But I doubt that the BCCI has either the ability or the gumption to even think long term as such.

Correct me if I am wrong...but isnt Dhoni still is the most successful Indian test skipper at home in terms of W/L ratio? Also in Asia, his W/L ratio is better than Imran Khan, Ranatunga, Azhar etc. Perhaps only behind Ganguly.

but definitely not in tests which is the most important for most of the pure cricket fans ( like you ) and he is still a gun ODI player

Yup. Dhoni started amazing. I remember we were so happy finally we had a captain who wasnt just happy with a 1-0 series win like Dravid or Kumble. Obviously International cricket is a huge burden especially when you are captaining 3 teams + the IPL. It's a drag. It was unfortunate that he had to stay a little too long. Should have stepped down a bit earlier.

One issue that both Kohli and Dhoni have or  had as test captains is field placements, especially to fast bowlers.

Orthodox field placements, with sufficient players in catching positions, have worked over decades in test matches.  But, very often we see or have seen  spread out slips with a 1st and 3rd slip and a gap in between. no gully,  no short-leg,  short leg too deep, too many fielders on the leg side  etc.  even when there has been swing or bounce.

This is a joke....

Ganguly should be first......Before 1999, indian team lacked the confidence to win esp outside sub-continent...he changed the indian team forever....Kohli is too earlt to even rate.....MSD is a great captain in T20's and ODI's (probably best in the world) but incredibly pathetic in tests...

The great force that lost Cb series in 2008. Lost WC in 2011 and many more..The reason we don't win much overseas is because you got no good pace bowlers and if you got hacks like Umesh yadav who can bowl phasttt like a bowling machine the ball  will get delivered even more phastter to the boundary line.

The one even virat won against is the shittest sides from sl to nz who are clueless compared to quality players from sanga to pointing at there home

Yes, Virat won against shittiest side of WI and SL. WI were shitty in 2011 too. Regarding SL, even our team is not a great team by any stretc of imagination. When SL had Sanga, we also had greats players like SRT, RD, VVS, and Sehwag.
