philcric Posted October 14, 2016 Posted October 14, 2016 (edited) Quote it was a delight to see Virat Kohli maturing quickly as a captain, in keeping with his rapid growth as a batsman in international cricket. This observation does not come because he has just won a Test series; it is more to do with how he has been visibly more patient, when earlier his almost child-like exuberance seemed to get the better of him. The tendency to make frequent field and bowling changes seems to have gone now. Kohli's on-field tactics this series had the perfect blend of attack and defence; not once did it seem like he was over-attacking or ultra-defensive. His cheerleading to get the crowd to make some noise and back his team up when things were quiet was a nice touch. Why, some fans might come to the ground just to be cheer-led by him. Kohli was in the game every minute of the series. Above all, for someone who is very much a modern-day product, in the way he looks and plays the other formats of the game, he showed he cares deeply for the five-day game. And that is a boon in these times for Test cricket. http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/1061362.html Edited October 14, 2016 by philcric tweaker and New guy 2
The Dark Horse Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 While I'm a fan of his attacking mindset, his team selection seriously irks me. Dropping Pujara and Vijay for Rohit and Dhawan is just not on. IIRC he even dropped Bhuvi after his 5 wicket haul. Hope he doesn't have a personal or Delhi agenda.

If you mean for the first test against NZ, it was a dry wkt in Kanpur and they selected a bowler who could reverse swing the ball... For the 3rd test, Bhuvi was injured express bowling 1

Vijay Pujara Kohli Rahane ASH Mishra Good team was already made... Those players are at end of there careers when we toured AUS and ENG where we lost badly. Captain can only do certain bit.. Some people are sad that India is finally winning big in tests and attacking. Sad
Zero_Unit Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 You guys are a bit too harsh here on both Kohli and Dhoni. Regardless of your view, Dhoni is by far the most successful Indian captain ever! This guy has brought team India a lot of glory. Also, Kohli will do great aswell. Just cause he is aggressive doesn't mean he can't be a great captain aswell. Pointing was no way in hell a quite/calm captain. But look at where Australia ended up under his leadership. Gotta support your captain yo!

Not sure what made you think i m sad about it but ok what ever ya say man.. Not going to argue SL victory was big on so many levels, helping to overcome so many horrible Indian test team stereotypes that have haunted us for years: After 22 years, India won Test series (2-1) vs Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka - their only previous series win against them in Sri Lanka was by 1-0 in 1993. For the first time ever, India won two successive Tests vs Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. For the first time ever, India won an overseas Test series after trailing behind in the series. In all India have won three Test deciders after trailing the series - the first two being the 1972-73 five-Test series vs England in India and 2000-01 three-Test series vs Australia in India. For only the fifth time, excluding Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, India won two Tests in an overseas series. As as for the South African series: 337 India's margin of victory, their biggest in terms of runs in Test history, beating their 320-run win against Australia in Mohali in 2008-09. It was also the second-biggest Test defeat for South Africa in terms of runs, next only to their 530-run loss against Australia in Melbourne in 1910 0.99 – South Africa’s run rate in the fourth innings at Feroz Shah Kotla, the lowest by any team innings in the history of Test cricket with at least 100 overs. 53 – Number of balls Faf du Plessis needed to get off the mark, the most by a South African to get off zero in a Test innings. 10.24 – The strike rate of Hashim Amla during the second innings in Delhi, the lowest in history of Test cricket where the batsman batted at least 200 balls. 0.64 – The run rate of partnership between AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla (27 off 253 balls), the lowest in history of Tests with minimum 100 balls. Anyway, even Without looking at the stats, a general knowledge and appreciation of Indias test cricket history is suffice to avoid childish comments like "kyunsa big". Gambit Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Most recent Indian captains started well. Dhoni's start was amazing and people thought his thinking was out of the box and he was always in the game. That quickly changed and by 2011 he had started to look stale and reactionary. Most captains (unless you have a team like Steve Waugh or Clive Lloyd) have a shelf life and for Dhoni that should have been max 4 years. express bowling, Jimmy Cliff and tweaker 3

But when people are genuinely concerned about Dhoni overstaying you do? Even now some people are bragging about how Dhoni got rid of seniors There is no love of Indian cricket here, just blind Dhoni devotion by some Sachin retired at 40, dravid and laxman both was 37+ even sehwag was 33 when he was dropped. Dhoni retired at 33 from test cricket. Not sure how can you define this as over stay. On the topic Kohli has certainly started well. I just hope he continues doing well, real test is still some time away hopefully he and the team would have matured further by then. Edited October 16, 2016 by jf1gp_1 tweaker 1

I am curious to know what will be the shelf life of kohli..... He has started his captaincy career in the best possible way tweaker 1

When people criticize Dhoni more than win or loss, they criticize his poor handling of bowlers, particularly pacers and having no long term strategy or plan except being reactionary. Even while winning, this is clearly seen and criticized. I don't know why you are pretending that his record is being criticized and not what he does on the field.. If his record needs to be criticized, it should be in T20 where he has been an average captain and player with an average record and there was no senior player retirement involved. 4 minutes ago, jf1gp_1 said: . 5 minutes ago, jf1gp_1 said: . 5 minutes ago, jf1gp_1 said: . 6 minutes ago, jf1gp_1 said: . 6 minutes ago, jf1gp_1 said: . That doesn't prevent us from seeing the clear difference between the two regardless of results. Dhoni started with his big T20 win. He was all about instincts and street smartness. This never translated well to test matches. He always depended on doing the safe thing and then using his instincts to make changes. That was never going to bring long term success in tests Kohli on the other hand seems to have a longer term plan to develop bowlers and have a core team. This might not work in LOIs as well as Dhoni did but his test team is likely to have longer term success 41 minutes ago, jf1gp_1 said: Sachin retired at 40, dravid and laxman both was 37+ even sehwag was 33 when he was dropped. He was been a passenger in T20 for a long time, living of the 2007 glory and ordinary as a captain. Dhoni's glamour and appeal was always about LOIs so him retiring from test which he was never interested in was not a big deal particularly when his record is no where close to the players you mentioned Edited October 16, 2016 by New guy putrevus and Mosher 2

philcric Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Dhoni is not over staying as a player. He was an average test player abroad. He was also not particularly invested in test cricket anyway. He retired at the right time. He is still a very good ODI player. Definitely deserves his spot in the team as Wk-Bat. He has been an average international T20 batter for many years. He has actually been playing much better in the last 1 year. So on recent performances he deserves his spot in the team. He's definitely over staying as a captain. He's nothing more to offer as a captain, well past his best. express bowling 1
putrevus Posted October 16, 2016 Posted October 16, 2016 Dhoni should become no4 in odis, he is good runner between the wickets and does not soak up lot of dot balls. Quit captaincy in all formats and just enjoy batting and keeping in ODIs. Ankit_sharma03 and Mosher 2
