Mishra maybe dropped because , on a rank turner, 3 spinners are not required.  Innings are usually on the shorter side and Ashwin and Jaddu are more than enough on such pitches.

I would prefer someone like Pandya who can score some quick runs. Our batting line-up needs a counter-attacking batsman at No.6  as almost all our batters, in the absence of Rahul, take a lot of time to build their innings and we need variety in our batting line-up to add momentum and counter-attack.

So you would have 3 pacers and 2 spinners on a rank turner? Very odd mix for the wicket.

 

Let's also not forget how Ashwin was outbowled by the England spinners in 2012 and in the first Test of this series.

I would play Pandya as a batsman, as a counter-attacking option on a rank-turner to add diversity to our batting line-up.  Nair is in the same mould as  almost all our batsmen that played the last test, where our batting looked too one-dimensional and often under pressure.  

 

Unless a batsman is a superb technician against spin, like a Pujara, he has little chance of lasting long and a counter-attacking batter will add a lot more runs in that time. 

 

If a 3rd spinner, in the form of Mishra, needs to be played because of Ashwin's doubtful efficacy against England...I will play him in place of one of our fast bowlers.

Pandya is not qualified to play as a batsman alone. I do feel that he is talented but I would not play him for his batting alone.

I  would not play Pandya as a pure batsman in normal circumstances too....but,  in the absence of a counter-attacking batsman on a low scoring pitch, I would do so to lend balance to our one-dimensional batting-lineup.

 

And, incase he replaces a fast bowler, he plays as an all-rounder.

They should just stick to the batting order to where they are comfortable at. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. I think Gambhir did well against New Zealand, getting us to a brisk start. He is here only on a temporary basis, and we need all the batting resources especially after seeing the last day's play.

IMO atleast Bhuvi brings swing early on to the party and is a more than handy bat. Nair is also a handy bowler.  IMO looking at Ash and Sir struggle we need to double down on the batting side of things.

Swing is condition dependent. It is not a magic trick that only BK knows.

Good news as Rahul is bacK:

 

Opener KL Rahul has been added India's squad for the second Test against England, to be played in Visakhapatnam from Thursday onwards. Rahul had injured his right hamstring while batting against New Zealand in Kanpur last month. The team management was satisfied with his fitness after he turned out for his Ranji side Karnataka, scoring 76 and 106 as his team dominated Rajasthan.

 

That Rahul was playing his Ranji match in Vizianagaram, only about 65 km from Vizag, allowed Rahul to join the squad on Tuesday, which is when India began to train for the Test. The promptness with which India have got Rahul back in the squad - the Ranji match in Vizianagaram ends on Wednesday - could mean Gautam Gambhir will be dropped after he scored 29 and 0 in Rajkot. Gambhir made a Test comeback after two years because of injuries to both Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan.

If Mishra had done well, you could argue for Pandya's inclusion at a fast bowler's expense.  He is not there yet as a test prospect to merit inclusion on his own.

Given the match is at Vizag and given that Kumble is coach, would not be surprised to see Mishra given another chance. Can see them dropping a front line seamer for Pandya to accommodate.

No point playing Gambhir anywhere in the batting order. As soon as he comes in to bat, the pacers will be back and they will need only one to three overs to send him back.

Gambhir has had his last hurrah. Got his final chance and did * all with it which was expected. Hopefully this will be the end of his career, great guy and a hardworker but not good enough. Mishra needs to play as the primary spinner and not as someone who is the 3rd choice of spinners, I think he'll be dropped with someone like Jayant Yadav(how's his batting) or Hardik Pandya. There's no way Umesh or Shami deserved to be dropped given they created atleast four opportunities in the first hour on an absolute patta wicket.
