What happened to Hemang Badani?

Recommended Posts

He was the Rahane of his time - blew the opportunities he got.   Every few months someone digs up that video and asks this question.

Badani could have been a useful MO bat, but his sweep shot was his achilles heel.  He was definitely better than the likes of Dinesh Mongia.  But he kept blowing the opportunities that came his way.   The final nail in the coffin was his failure against the Aussies in a low-scoring chase when he was playing as that extra batsman.   I think he got out sweeping there as well.  Never mind that India dropped close to 5 catches in that game, Ganguly was royally pissed that they lost a series decider(?) on his home ground.   He even said something to the effect of "If you are playing as the 6th batsman, and can't get the job done, then you don't belong in the team".  Hemang, the gujju boy from Tamil nadu, never played for India again.

Hemang Badani is not even 0.000000001 percent of Rahane, stats not withstanding. This random badani thread brought to mind memory of aweful batsman Vijay bharadwaj of those days. ::laugh1: Badani was decent though.

Vijay Bharadwaj won the man of the series in his debut series and shone with both bat and ball.

He went to that disastrous Aussie series in 99-00 m,failed in the few chances he got and never played for India again.

While I agree he was mediocre,he deserved some more chances than he ended up getting.

Bharadwaj played too few matches to be judged - did well in 1 series, and failed in another.

Badani always comes to mind when I think of monumental stupidity of Indian cricket. The guy hits 100 against Australia and is asked to sit out for the next match. It canot get any more stupid than that.

Maybe you are thinking of someone else.

Bedani's only 100 came against Australia on 28th March 2001. He played on 31st March, 3rd April and 6th April.

The big reason why many promising batsmen from previous years used to fail eventually was because they were never exposed to conditions outside India which were much more helpful for fast bowlers and they never used to face fast bowlers of high quality in their career. Many batsmen were like fish out of water in Australia, South Africa, West Indies, England, NZ.

Comparatively now many Indian batsmen tour other countries regularly as part of A tours before their debut, have better FC competition at home, have better facilities, play in different conditions at home and also the IPL experience helps them ease into international cricket far more easily. Some of the players whom many ridicule now could have decent careers if they played in current era.

And many of the pitches abroad have become much friendlier than before
