Dhoni still the best keeper in the world - MSK Prasad

Quote

"How many of us still believe that MSD is the best wicketkeeper in the world?" When MSK Prasad, India's chairman of selectors, asked for a show of hands in response to that question, about three to four hands went up out of 25-odd people. Prasad expressed surprise at the circumspection over MS Dhoni's inclusion in the 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy, after he was asked if there was concern among the selectors over Dhoni's spot in the squad.

"We all believe he is still the best wicketkeeper in the world," Prasad said. "We are only talking and focusing on his batting form. He is an invaluable asset to this team. When it comes to crunch situations, [with] his inputs, I think he has got one of the best brains. He is the best person to guide Virat [Kohli]."

Prasad's praise is not misplaced, considering Dhoni still is a key player for India as far as strategising goes. But as a batsman, he has struggled recently in limited-overs cricket. In 13 ODIs since January last year, Dhoni has scored 443 runs at an average of 34.07, compared to his career average of 51. He has struck them at a strike rate of 86.69 and has one century and one fifty.

In this period, Dhoni has played both at No. 4 and 5, but his strike rate is 10th among 17 players. As a No. 4 during that period, Dhoni averages 30 and strikes at 76.14. Batting one position lower, the average and strike rate climb to 36.62 and 93.31 respectively.

So far this IPL, Dhoni has compiled 235 runs for Rising Pune Supergiant at an underwhelming strike rate of 114.07 - his worst across seasons - which has further strengthened concerns over his quick scoring ability. Just last season, he was striking them at 135. Dhoni has also scored at less than run a ball in six out of 12 innings so far this IPL.

Do you guys agree with MSK Prasad? I think MS is still our best WK, but not the best WK-bat in the world.

MSK Prasad is just trying to support his fellow mate (team mate).Nothing wrong in that.

Obviously DeKock is the best WK batsman in the world.By a long shot.

Butler is most likely second though not convinced by his India tour and IPL .

Dhoni is definitely third best .

Others like Sarfraz Watling Wade Chandimal are just much of sameness .

MS is still the best WK to spinners in ODIs. Has always been ok against pacers. His keeping is not a concern. As a package, he is still a very good ODI player.

It's his batting, especially power hitting ability, that has seriously declined.

I'd agree Dhoni is one of the best keepers in the World even at this time .  I cant' think of anyone else .

Dhoni's game sense and ability to read the game is one of the best , I can't rememeber the last time Dhoni missed a catch - whereas it's quite apparent even in IPL -  How many times Dhoni has changed the time of the game by creating a stumping chance from nowhere or executing a run out.    He's got a good psychological edge even on batsman when he's keeping because they know how quick he can be .   I don't see Karthik / Saha bringing that sort of pressure on the batsman

I think the question here isn't whos a better WK -batsman but purely a WK -  In terms of keeping skills Dhoni is way superior that De Kock and Butler isn't the best keeper.

I am talking purely as a wicket keeper not a keeper/batsman

Dhoni hasn't missed a catch because he doesnt even go for tough chances. How many times i have seen ball flying between him and first slip where it should have been him going for that catch.

Really ,  I don't remember I'v ever seen that with Dhoni at all .  Care to list any matches  this happend or any videos ?

He has never been that acrobatic. You rarely associate Dhoni as the type to make full length dives while keeping to pacers. Could have something to do with his unorthodox keeping technique.

Real limited overs cricket is 50 overs cricket and not twenty20. Other youngsters are good and have shown promise but a set Dhoni is the best batsman in the world and on par with Kohli at times while chasing.

Not a huge fan of his 20 over game but Dhoni in 50 overs is a complete different thing - its like watching Nadal play on Clay all of sudden after struggling on hard courts.

The earlier he bats in the middle order the better. If by 35-40th over he has batted for about 30-40 balls, thats a good sign for us that we are going to fiinish well.

Msk prasad is still the worst selector in the world.even with dhoni in the squad could have easily played pant as a bat or kept a backup wicket keeper.

Don't you guys read ? Pant will not play even if he is picked for the squad.

Quote

“Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Dinesh Karthik, Shardul Thakur, Suresh Raina were also discussed. Visas will be applied. They will be on standby,” Chief Selector BCCI MSK Prasad said in the much-awaited meeting.

In future tour, Pant and Kuldeep are meant to play for India LOI squad.

When put against the spinners, yes he is but against pacers especially against genuine pacers he is average he can't jump and dive or stretch like Qdk or our own saha, so overall he is OK wicketkeeper but not the best

How frequent do you see dhoni diving to sides to take a catch or stop a wide. Not very frequent. Throughout the career he has been like this. Pant even in short glimpse that we have of him in this IPL has been diving, jumping, taking some screamers. Same with Saha in tests. Dhoni is a champion of stumpings but stumping is not all that is to keeping. There is merit to allegations of not going for tough chances.People have noticed thi s throughout his career. Still he is an upgrade over Parthiv, karthik, Utthapa etc.
