Bowling Kedar Jadhav was MS Dhoni’s idea, reveals Virat Kohli

MS Dhoni’s behind-the-scenes role in India’s ICC Champions Trophy campaign once again came to the fore during the semifinal match against Bangladesh at the Edgbaston cricket ground on Thursday. If Kedar Jadhav turned the game for India, it was only after the former skipper advised Virat Kohli to try a part-timer.

Another ‘priceless’ input from MS Dhoni helped Kohli introduce a part-time off spinner like Kedar Jadhav into the attack and how the game changed in India’s favour. India walloped Bangladesh by nine wickets to storm into Sunday’s Champions Trophy final where a newborn Pakistan are waiting.

Kohli, whose respect for Dhoni has been quite consistent, revealed that when Hardik Pandya was leaking runs, it was India’s former captain who said that the regulars needed rest and Kedar Jadhav was the right man to clinch a breakthrough.

Kedar Jadhav (6-0-22-2) got the wickets of Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim in quick succession and Bangladesh never recovered from that dual blow. Shakib Al Hasan’s departure only added to the pressure.

Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur undid their third wicket 123-run stand when both senior batsmen gifted their wickets by playing atrocious strokes on a wicket that was tailor-made for runs.

“Kedar’s wickets were a bonus. We wanted to cover up the overs because Hardik was going for runs. MS said Kedar was a good option and that worked for us,” said Kohli.

Kedar Jadhav said his bowling was all about “reading the batsman’s mind”.

“I had six wickets before this and all were top batsmen, not tailenders. Today, I was being guided a lot by MS Dhoni and just by eye contact I knew what lengths to bowl,” said Jadhav.

His impeccable glovework notwithstanding, MS Dhoni’s presence in the dressing room is indeed working wonders. Kohli’s appreciation and now Jadhav’s acknowledgement are testimony enough that Dhoni is here to stay for some time.

India cannot go in a Final thinking they will have Kedar Jadhav to bowl the regular 50 overs. Its ok if he is utilized in a odd game however he is not a regular bowler. Sooner than later he will be hit all around.

Virat and Dhoni made the change and it worked against BD. Thats it . Nothing more should be read into it

5 specialized bowlers are a must apart from Pandya.

These are Jadhav's latest Batting and bowling performances form Cricinfo. Since May he hasn't done anything special with the bowl (and even with the BAT in fact)

I do know his performance against England but by cricketing standards that was a time ago.

He was keeping in IPL.... obviously he can't bowl while he keep

And "since May" is a very convinent way of doing stats.

The whole RCB team was suffering the whole season. He did play a couple of good innings.

Has Batted only twice since IPL with 31 in one warm-up and then a quick fire 25 off 13 against SL.

Hardly bowled in the SL game and got two wickets yesterday.

Kohli is consistently seeking help from Dhoni. Its completely visible if you are spectator in ground. if you arent in ground you either see commie or a advert on tele when that happens between over change.

And there is nothing wrong in that. Just goes to proove that Kohli is not as big of N00B as some people make out of him or media reports.

You do Steve Smith, You end up Puneri way.

Kedar and Kohli too bowled against srillanka to cover up overs of jadeja instead of taking wickets we went defensive and had to loose the game.We need to look for wickets taking bowlers like kuldeep yadav instead of depending on luck.

That is why dhoni is very essential to this team

M shocked actually people are surprised at it, In kohli's captaincy we hardly have seen such moves.....dhoni was always very good at using these papplu cards

Its gr8 for kohli to get help from dhoni as long as he is there.......dhoni has been one of the most brilliant odi captains

Every captain needs some sought of help......dhoni in intial yrs was lucky to have lot of seniors and during our downfall he didnt have nybody to give a diff perspective .

Tilll the time dhoni is there kohli shud make the best use of him

So Dhoni suggested to use a 6th bowler because the 5th bowler was a weak link and leaking runs....Genius!!!

I better see a shrine for me on ICF for giving such a valuable and unselfish life related advice to all ICF folks

Hey let me see. Your main bowlers have already bowled 6 and 5 overs respectively. Your two main spinners and the 3rd phaast bowler is going for runs. Yuvi cant bowl. Hey let me try something new. Yeah lets try Jadhav. You want a cookie for that suggestion which pretty much everyone else even if they have never watched cricket in their lives could suggest :cantstop:

I mean yeah if Dhoni suggested some different field placings or something he deserves credit but this seriously.

You seem to be short on comprehension as well.

Its not the suggestion, but the line and lengths that helped, and that is where MSD'a advice probably helped .If you see the first wicket, you would see how animated Dhoni was .Apparently there was a plan that was devised and it worked.
