At this moment, I would say Lyon is more complete bowler even though Ashwin has stellar record in India. Lyon has troubled almost every team.

7 MOS in 54 matches, enough said. A huge reason Lyon has good averages is because after the relentless pace barrage of Australia, batsmen try to take more risk against him and hence lose wickets (like Moeen did to us in 2014). Ashwin on the other hand has the responsibility of winning matches in 70% of the matches India plays, opponent batsmen try their best to not give him wickets. In UAE when the Aussie bowlers were neutralized what did Lyon do, was flogged to submission. Lyon is no doubt a brilliant bowler but behind Ashwin as of now, Ashwin is a serial match winner. Since Steyn I have never seen a bowler run through the opponent team like Ash does, 7 MOS aise hee thodi milta hai !!!

Have you been watching Lyon bowl?  In India against India, and in the ongoing Ashes?  How long ago was the UAE series?  If Ashwin is allowed slack and we can claim that he is an improved bowler today, and bound to do better on this series of away tours, same goes for Lyon.

Ashwin is an over-exposed bowler compared to Lyon.  Ashwin has been involved in IPL, ODI, T20 international, Tests for a very long time. Many have seen him , played with him , against him at various levels even in friendlier conditions. Lyon is merely a test player who happens to be  a back up bowler for a good set of fast bowlers. Once he plays more and more, Ashwin will get better. His role doesn't have to be like picking 10fer abroad. 1 or 2 wickets here and there would do.

Top 4 batsmen dismissal

Ashwin 41%

Lyon 32%

Lower 5 batsmen

Lyon 44%

Ashwin 38%

Kinda underlines what kind of wickets they take. Ashwin can be a nightmare to many top order batsmen when on Song.  Lyon is a bit like Wasim Akram lol padding up stats with tailender wickets

This year Lyon has been the best spinner, but Ashwin has already had 2-3 stellar years. I am not downplaying Lyon here, he can be the next Swann if he keeps this up for 2-3 more years. I put these 3 as the best offies since I started watching the game, not including chuckers ofc.

Apart from Aus, Ashwin has decent record everywhere. SA only played 1 game on a green mamba so not a huge sample size.

In Aus he wasn't bad if you compare it with how Murali, Harbhajan and Ajmal performed over there. Swann had a great series in 2010-11 but was reduced to tears and hence quit midway during the 2013-14 Ashes !!! In 2014-15 Ashwin had better returns than Lyon in the 3 tests they played together. Even in England I watched his bowling ball by ball and he was by no means bad, there was literally zero support and our batting line up was getting pummeled. Nevertheless I want Jaddu to play in SA ahead of Ashwin mainly because he can contain better and SA has many righties. Eng has many lefties, so Ash must play. In Aus we need a wrist spinner and Kuldeep fits the bill.

Is this true? Isn't WA a great bowler, an ATG? Can be a part of a world-11 squad? Interested if folks think otherwise about WA.

Yes. If you slice and dice Akram's record he has a very high percentage of tailender wickets.

Lyon is probably more difficult to play because he's shorter than Ashwin. And spinners with relatively short height get the ball to flight and dip more easily.

Lyon ability to rip the ball and impart side spin is amazing being a finger spinner.

Ashwin even though looks stronger build with big palm and fingers isn't able to generate same amount of revs which hampers him on flat pitches.

But other than that in terms of dip drift guile ashwin is a class act when on top.
