Not really. We lost by big margins. Our batting was half baked. We had chance in second test first innings to make a big score but otherwise they just kept finding ways to take our wickets regularly.

Add to that, the series confirmed also how much getting familiar with conditions matters. Should have come early and had practice games, instead of using the first couple of tests to get comfortable in SA.

We should have won first after SA were 12/3 in first innings if not for dropped catches.

Ummm, no? Take the whole match into contention and we had a brilliant chance to seal the series. It's these selection errors that led to us chasing those scores in the 4th innings.

Yes we could have won 3-0 . So stop slagging of the team . Shows how good we are 

 

so many lessons from this series . Not just from kohli but players . Individual would have learnt so much from this and be better for it

In hindsight, I feel this series loss was necessary, if only to help Virat realize how important it is to prepare properly and pick the right players to win oversees. He batted really well but the rest of the batsmen struggled.

 

The team management need to be firm and demand that the BCCIdiots don't organize pointless bilaterals before important overseas tours. If the lessons from this series are learnt, we'll be able to do well in Eng, Aus and NZ.

Serious question did India exceed expectations  in any department or was a let down in another?

 

Bowling- I believe everyone unanimously agreed this was the best fastbowling set to tour overseas  ever. Lived up to their expectations. Their quick adaptability to different conditions was questioned which is what exactly the did in the first innings of the first test. Only pleasant surprise was Ashwin exceeding expectation and Pandya chipping in at times.

 

Batting- Most cricket lovers knew that this is no longer the golden age of Indian batting and a group of 2-3 players should fire at once to set up a chance.  It was more or less a one man show with Kohli....Consistency of Rahane,Vijay....adaptability of Pujara,Rohit and Dhawan were all mentioned and that came  true at one point or the other.

 

Fielding- especially catching was expected to be piss poor and the only test we upped our fielding we won. Wasn’t this a given at the start of the tour?

 

so  again I ask how come people were expecting a 3-0 drubbing of South Africa....based on what we thought a closely contested series to South Africa was pretty much the popular vote and that’s what happened. 2-1 was the perfect result.

 

 

It wasn’t a case of overestimating South Africa but looking in house at our own weaknesses.

Very good points. The only place where I thought there should have been improvement was fielding. In all 3 tests, we were in the game in the second innings, but our fielding blew it up in the second game especially.

Apart from the poor preparation and selections, I actually think Kohli and co. we're surprised by the strength of the pace attack. Saffers usually play 3 seamers and a spinner and last time we hammered Tahir and forced the seamers to bowl extra overs. They did their homework and went in with atleast 4 quicks which meant that there was no respite from pace . It was a gamble that paid off well for them being one batsman light. A team without match practice in these conditions were bound to struggle against Morkel,philtrundler,Rabada and Steyn/Ngidi.
