I could not have phrased it any better than you did.

need to look at all data points and Ashwin has some issues.

Jadeja, Chahal and Kuldeep should have been given a chance.

I cant believe Moeen out bowled Ashwin.

but having said all that it was our batting that was a failure not our bowling.

our pace battery more than delivered.

End of the day I fault Kohli/Shastri the axis of evil.

Thank you.

What to do.

Should have played 2 spinners all the series.

If they so wanted Pandya to play, Jaddu should have been the lone spinner last test taking into account Ashwin's injury.

Kuldeep is too new and raw to be lone spinner. Can be 2nd spinner at best for now.

They should have.

Jaddu gets to play the next game along with Nair. I dont care who is dropped but both deserve it.

Time to move on from Ashwin and find new right arm off-spin in Tests. Lyon's simplicity and accuracy just highlighting how poor Ashwin was in England last year, should have won at least one match for India on pitches offering plenty of turn.

Lyon ripped apart pretty much same England batting line-up, took advantage of so many left handed batsmen, bowled brilliantly on a crumbling day 5 pitch.

Lyon is going to be nemesis for England if they are batting into day 4/5. For Ashwin, I think time to say goodbye.

Ashwin's rhythm has been badly lost all due to his vagaries.. of changing himself to bowl wrist spin in IPL, giving undue weightage to finding a place in world cup even though it was very clear that he wouldn't be selected and trying to somehow prove his relevance in short formats ..  BCCI and team management should treat test specialists differently.. rate them highly and give them more money !!

Nathan Lyon doesn't have a IPL contract, earns a fraction of what Ashwin does.. but instead focused himself on his strengths of flight, drift , dip and bounce.. and is now winning ashes in England.

Lyon is undoubtedly the best finger spinner in the last few decades ( i.e, if you can call Murali as a wrist spinner )

That's not true, if you discount the IPL Oz central contracts are as lucrative as they come. IIRC the top tier players get over a million dollars each year.

Lyon was outbowled both times by Jad in the series they played together, although you could argue that Lyon is a more conditions independent bowler given he plays on the deadest tracks on the planet, for finger spinners. I will also add Maharaj who outbowled Lyon both times they played in a series together.

I think looking back a couple of years the best spinners have been herath and lyon in all conditions

keep it simple manta. No doosra, no carom ball just flight bounce and some spin.

In the past indian spinners had an excuse of pacers not going enough work up front. But we have a more than decent pace battery.

In his defence Ashwin has had a decent county outing.  Its last chance saloon IMO in the coming 2 years for him.

Ashwin has never been that good spinner as his unreal numbers at homes suggests, Complete dud at overseas, Lyon is unarguably the best offspinner currently. Even Maharaj is good, too.

lyon is very good, but peak swan was slightly better IMO. however, as you said, lyon is the best offie around. in left-armers, I would say shakib, jaddu and maharaj are all solid.

IMO, in many overseas conditions outside SC, both jaddu (for AR abilities) and Kuldeep (took that valuable 5-fer in Oz) might leapfrog ashwin. what has also hurt is ashwin's complete lack of interest and consequent decline in batting.

Lyon picks up 3 wickets on Day 1 at Lords.

I still remember how Ashwin during last series with England went overboard after plotting a dismissal of someone and revealing the secret on the same-day on TV . He then played the series when he shouldn't have and had meagre returns while Moeen did brilliantly.

I hope Ashwin is dropped for the coming overseas tours. Most of the time he tries too many things or plays half-fit.

Ashwin's biggest problem is that he does not have enough faith in his stock ball, the simple off spinner.  He does not get enough turn or bounce with this delivery if it is not a turning track.   Probably because he has not tried to improve this delivery or practice it enough.

Variations come in handy when they are used as a surprise.  But the main delivery has to be an awesome one.

Ashwin has spent too much time trying to develop magic deliveries and variations and neglected the development process of his stock ball.

Kuldeep was our first choice spinner in the last series in Aus and did very well. I hope the team management continues to back him rather than going back to Ashwin.

Ashwin has failed the team on two back to back away test cycles and should not be allowed easy wickets vs weaker opposition any longer.

Jadeja has surpassed him as main spinner in the team.Jadeja may not win matches on his own but he is consistent and has improved his batting also.Ashwin after 2016 injury in 4th test against England has never been the same.He has not taken a 10fer and has only two 5fers in  22 tests.He has become injury prone and headstrong.

jaddu's batting has really flowered over the past 2.5 yrs or so. he has a test avg of 42+ since jan 2016, and even outside Ind it's still over 40. he should always be one of the 5 bowlers, and I would play him at 7 (or even as high as 6 depending on situation) instead of languishing at 8 or 9. without many realizing it, jaddu the batsman is becoming almost vettori-like... scores useful 30s and 50s down the order that are often forgotten.
