gavaskar will never ever blame his fellow marathi :p:

Marathis in general are very unbiased and would not think twice before criticizing their own people. So many marathis used to criticize tendlya when he used to commit mistakes. On the other hand bengalis even supported south african team once when ganguli was removed from team. Everyone knows the behavior of south indians.

He is still a fantastic keeper. Unfortunately shorter format needs batsman keeper. Unless you come out and say we are playing him as keeper and he bats at say 8.

What fantastic, havent you seen him dropping straight catches. I think in one of the match against Pak he dropped 2 simple catches, he misses run out as well. Besides few stumping what else he has to offer nothing. He is big zero at present the most super useless cricketer. Even hk, Afg has better keeper batsmen than him...

This was on Match day on ESPNCricinfo I think. Raunak Kapoor was asking the right questions and grilling deep dasgupta and Sanju about the middle order including dhoni. Both fairly criticised DK,rayudu and Jadhav(fitness). But deep dasgupta was trying to avoid the dhoni question like the plague . Sanju Manju came up with the excuse that the world cup is an event where there s a lot of pressure and therefore Kohli would want a senior experienced cricketer along with him and that dhoni was still the best WK. Whenever raunak brought up Rishabh pant s name, they blatantly avoided it . It was terrible to watch.

Don’t take Star or Espn seriously they are cheerleading team for MS the way Star was cheerleading for him it was sickening likes of Laxman,Bhajji and Zak to an extent lost credibility in my eyes cause they kept praising MSD.

To be fair I think ESPN and Sony commentators are much better currently than Murdoch's networks. STAR having rights to IPL and international cricket in India probably have to protect brand IPL, brand Dhoni and brand Kohli and if not divert , atleast dilute their criticism s in order to please the powers that be. SonyESPN have no such obligations. Understandable if commentators don't do that there either since they probably don't have exclusive contracts with Sony but Cricinfo s analysts like agarkar are pretty honest and direct.

+1 .. BCCI has always favored STAR over other channels. I think the champions league t20 was created just for star and cancelled after star complained of monetisation issues.

All the while, Murdoch is an IPL franchisee owner (Rajasthan Royals) along with Modi

Some background that you may have missed out: Let's rewind back to 2009 when the IPL debuted. Lalit Modi wanted Star, instead of MSM, to have the rights. However, what is not reported is that Star did NOT see any potential in the IPL and let the rights go to MSM. The IPL was a huge success, and Star were left licking their wounds and ruing the fact that they lost out on something very lucrative.

Then came the Champion's League. Now Star was adamant that it gets the rights at any cost, and that's what the shrewd Lalit Modi did -- sold the CL's rights to Star at very very high cost telling them that it will be bigger then the IPL, and Star got the bait happily. As everyone knows already, CL is dead. Not a soul watches or follows it. The no-show cost Star dearly, who were now in deep neck serious losses. Star did everything they could to get back the interest of the people, first by roping Big B for the first season and then by getting SRK in their ads. Absolutely nothing worked. Star further suffered huge losses as the public were repelled by India's overseas performance as the Men in Blue lost 4-0 to Eng and Australia. So much so that rumors were rife in the Media Industry that they couldn't afford a Harsha Bhogle or a Sunil Gavaskar (after whom the trophy was named) in Australia to do the commentary. Further more, the standards of the Australia tests were dismal to say the least.

Yes, STAR India is taking a punt that the TRAI means business however, this deal will decide the Star's monopoly, not only, in telecasting cricket in India in terms of broadcasting standards and the eye-balls that it manages to get but also in terms of business. This is indeed the 'make or break' deal for Star. Well played Star, but as they say in cricket 'still ain't out of the woods'.

Excellent post. I would go further back to 2006 though. When Prasar Bharti's contract with BCCI expired, there was a massive controversy regarding the bidding process that followed and although Nimbus entertainment were initially awarded the rights fpor Indian cricket, BCCI then pulled the plug based on some minor technicality and i think Nimbus took BCCI to court. ESPNStar hadn't even sent their bid before the stipulated time!
