When was the last time this Indian team surprised (in a good way) or exceeded expectations?

Last two should not be counted or exceed expectation. Any non white wash in india is below expectation for me. Also white ball icc trophy is India's forte.

I rate the 2010 1-1 in South Africa highly. After that, everything was something which could have happened, should have happened. Let's be honest, every white ball tournament last 7 8 years we expect india to win or at least top 2 3.

SA ODI series?

CT 13?

4-0 win against Aussies at home?

2011 WC?

2011 WC for me. SRT was in great Test form coming into the series, but did not expect him to do so well (barring the final as always). And I had very low hopes/expectations from our bowling. CT2013 was also a bonus, but it was helped by the unusual pitches which enabled Sir to run amok. 2011 SA series was also a near-miracle.

Can name more, but which were negative surprises. in Tests - Ind in Eng (3 tours), Ind in SA 2018 and Ind in Oz to name a few.

1) little surprised

2) little surprised

3) Totally surprised . Aussies couldnt recover after they got abused by dhoni in the first test :p:

4) Not at all surprised.  We were expected to win.

Should expand the question to include pleasant memories which became talk of nation also.

Then it can include Sharma's double 100 in ODIs.

SRT's double 100

2007 test series win in England

2007 World T20

2010 test series in SA

2011 WC ( we were expected to win, but still joy was enormous)

2013 CT

Whitewash of Aussies (after losses people wanted and expected it, but still whitewashing oppositions in 4 match series is rare for Indian team)

After that it's been dull and makes worth discussion only on cricket forums or among cricket nerds.

Still 2011 is among my top 3 cricket memory.next few would be 2003-4 test series, 2007-08 CB series and the test series win in Pakistan.

2013 CT - Couple of new players and they won that tournament convincingly. The LOI performance gone down after that.

SA Test tour under Kohli - The way our bowlers bowled did surprise me.

1. Home series vs SA - won 3-0 . We had not beaten SA in a test series, home or away since 2004

2. Away series in SL (2015) - won 2-1. We had not beaten SL in SL since 1993

3. Home series vs Eng - won 4-0 (won more than 1 test vs England at home since 1993, had not won vs Eng since 2008)

We forget those achievements now because our expectations have gone up.

WC 2015 ,I thought we'd crash out in qf after a struggle in the GS. The Pakistan match was the perhaps the first time when I got scared of them actually beating us in a wc.

Odis in saf this year ,I though we would lose 4-2 something but surprise surprise.

Ct 2013 has to be on top as well ,never thought we'd win after the IPl fixing drama.

Saf test in 2013, I had no expectations from that tour apart from a whitewash

2003 Aus tour.  Everyone expected us to continue the pattern of being absolutely destroyed and dominated by that Strong Aus team.

If we had DRS, and even just a little bit of luck, we would have won that "Steve Waugh Farewell" series.  As it is, we still retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on Australian soil, since we had won the preceding series in India.

After that, we've always gone on test tours with a puncher's chance, at a minimum.  So I wouldn't say other subsequent tours really exceeded expectations much.

^^ that is complete myth 2003-04 Australin team had just two bowlers , Lee and Gillespie with Lee still finding his way.Lee was never a great test bowler .Still our best team contrived to lose one test against that weak bowling attack .

They are calling this Australian team weak but this bowling attack is zillion times better than that one.

The MCG test was terrible considering sehwag scored 190. The rest of the bats just folded including sachin dravid and laxman.

Dravid did not fold. Day 2 morning was terrible. It was my 12th birthday. :(

Sorry thats why I have no love for fab five, they folded like cheap tents under pressure even though they had so much talent.Heck you can make a case that they had one of the most talented batting groups in history of cricket and yet they never stood up and faced adversity like other great batting groups.
