Even I did not get 15 chances to prove myself: Virat Kohli

The Men in Blue will play around 30 T20I matches before the World Cup and Kohli said that each individual coming in the team should have a mindset to make their mark.

"We are very clear. It is not that anyone will get 30 chances. Even when I came in the team, I didn't think I will get 15-20 games and I knew I will mostly get chances in three to five games and I have to prove myself. One will get suppose five chances and he will have to prove himself. That is the level we are playing at. As the team management has that mindset, the individual should also have the same," Kohli said in an interaction on bcci.tv

"It is a delicate balance to strike but as we have 30 games before it (World Cup), so we have to figure out how much time each individual gets," he added.

Asked whether the roadmap for the T20 World Cup starts from Sunday, when India take on South Africa in Dharamsala in the first affair of the three-match rubber, Kohli said: "We feel both the T20Is and the Test championship are in our focus as both of them are milestones and that is why youngsters are being pushed in from time to time as it is important to settle the team combination because we have to figure out the guys who will take the team forward."

He defenitely got more than 15 to 20 games as initially he was very average with the bat. Also should have been dropped for good after the 10 innings on the trot he failed in England tour by this account.

Also he has not given youngsters even those 15 to 20 games on the trot:

Poor Siraj was dropped for good after 3 T20s (also picked in wrong format)

Iyer was dropped after 3 or 4 failures first time round

KL Rahul has been dropped in wrong format  T20s  based on other format performance (he averages 43 at 148 SR in T20Is)

And then we have cases of players who were doing well being dropped after a lean patch like Kuldeep.

This is what he lacks- man management ,eye for a player n trusting his own instincts

  • If u have an eye for player u will back him to hilt. Thats what ganguly always talks about marking ur players n backing them since u cant be fair to everyone
  • Man management- u can treat every player same way, if he didnt get it doesnt mean others will play like him. Some take time some dont.....infact most youngsters take a lot of time
  • trusting ur instincts- good or bad everyone has one. The reason he has not  been a good LOI captain coz u it doesnt give u a lot of time like test so u have to trust ur instincts more. He wanted assurity like having dhoni n have safe players . He has an instinct to tell that shubhman gill was better then him in his age but since he doesnt trust it he doesnt even back gill for more then 2 games

For one who gets about 15 chances every IPL season but fails miserably as a captain, he has plenty to say about unestablished players having to make the cut in just 5 games. He is killing careers even before they start. I hope the RCB management follows his own criterion and sacks him from the Captain's post. The BCCI and media is blinded by his personal stats but this guy is a plague on Indian cricket.

^^ What hidden agenda Kohli has against Pant???

Not apparent at this point.  But it is clear that pressure is being piled onto Pant, and publicly.  It is the latter that I have a big problem with.  It is within reason for the team to feel that they want Pant to play with more "maturity" or whatever.  But publicly castigating him, pressurizing him, is counter-productive.  The only reason(s) to do so, is to set the table to push him out of the team.  There is no other reason that would justify such public criticism.

If they had anything against him , they could have played Mayank Agarwal in world cup.If they drop Pant for first test, I would be very pissed too.Pant has not done anything for him to be kept out of the team.

This nonsense that Saha is better keeper has to stop, Pant is the future and he should be backed .

Well Saha is defo the better keeper.  But Pant isn't quite Parthiv bad, and by yards the better long term prospect.

Dont agree with hidden agenda

A lot of indian parents n teachers have this mentality to get the perfomance by putting the kid under pressure .....

Its lack of understanding of man management (kohli expects everyone to be like him which is not possible)

n most importantly lack of patience in kaptaan which explains the No.4 mess in last few yrs

There's a difference between putting pressure and public condemnation.  A big difference.

Public condemnation is lack of patience in captain reflecting on others .......media n public is putting pressure on them and they are cracking coz they themselves have no faith. Look at same kohli defending dhoni for years coz he believed in him and had patience for it .....with youngster he has no patience so he cracks under pressure when put by media n ppl

Yes he might have been better keeper before injury but as a package Pant is miles ahead.

Thank god dhoni wasnt like u coz after ur 1st 5 innings in test u avg - 15

These statement only send out wrong insecurity among youngsters. 5 chances are to less specially for batsman....all it takes is one ball to get batsman out. Dont say out loud 5 as number coz with every failure pressure build more for next game as they knw now they have one less game left

Kohli's on thin ice in terms of trust in his captaincy and selection policies.

If players are only to get "5" chances, how many chances is Rohit Sharma supposed to get for tests?

Virat has been playing favorites quite nakedly.  And this is a pattern that goes back many years.

He will get away with it as long as the team results are good.  But that's not assured.

Arrey ghanta on thin ice! He is running a mafia ring. No one can touch him. He will surpass the influence MSD has on Indian cricket. This guy is so arrogant and full of himself, it is unbelievable and detrimental for Indian cricket. Sadly no one has the balls to say it in his face fearing strong verbal abuse. I remember some reporter writing something negative about Anushka during 2014-15 Aus tour and he MC/BC the phuck out of another reporter who he mistook to be the one who wrote the article. After that, no apology whatsoever.

When VK first became test captain I think he averaged less than Ashwin with the bat. UV was a disaster between the 2000 ICC KO and 2002 Natwest final, must have averaged in low 20s in that period....how did he turn out later? Players have been given more than 15 chances to prove themselves. Another reason to boycott Indian cricket, these guys can't even spout intelligent lies.
