Manjrekar bemoans lack of quality in test cricket

What he says is very much applicable to Australia. Even in the 2014-15 series, Smith was bailing out his team time after time. I don't remember exactly how many Warner scored, but suffice to say that he and Smith were the pillars for the batting lineup, without which it was very weak.

Same case in the 70s ,80s and early 90s. you can't have great batting and bowling lineups in the same era

Do you mean the Indian team?  Because the 80s West Indies had, and as did the Aussies for a period in the late 90s mid 2000s

This is the greatest bowling era, that's why.

India, NZ, Eng, BD (esp at home, no more cheap 200s) have their best ever attacks. Don't bring up Eng bowling feats from 40s and 50s now.

Aus with Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc, Pattinson, Lyon....one of their greatest attacks.

WI best since Ambrose/Walsh era.

RSA quite good at home and Aus, scary good till circa 2017-18 with their greatest ever attack in Philander, Steyn, Morkel, Rabada...Maharaj will end up as their greatest spinner.

Only SL and Pak have declined. Mainly due to clampdown on chucking, tampering. SL had Herath till a couple of years back and Lakmal now, they never had world class test quicks tbh. Pak was quite good in early 2010s when Ajmal/Hafeez chucked their way to glory so many times in the desert....statistically Abbas, Yasir are very good and Shaheen has potential, difficult to match Imran/Sarfaraz, W/W feats and enforce mysterious collapses from 220/2 to 250 ao (check the scorecards of their tours to NZ, Eng in 80s/90s)...what to do, so many video cameras around.

Ye lodu khud k din bhul gaya....in 90s during overseas tests it was only Tendulkar or else whole fixer brigades azzu, jaddu , mongu and useless players like manju were not able to put even 50-100 runs.

No, actually meant in 90s he and Tendulkar were the only 2 batsmen who were carrying expectations of a billion people on their shoulders,he always says The Great Taliban Khan was a fan of my batting, but didn't know Taliban Khan deliberately placed him in chana ka jhaad to strengthen their chances against India

Best post ever. This is 100% true.

Bowling always impresses the crowd more. It's more entertaining.

Now if we can break some bones in the next 2 tests I will be happy. Particularly the one that hurt one of our key players would be nice.

He should be more direct and say that he did not like the way India fought back. That Pak lost to NZ only added to his agonies.

you understood his agony

it does feel like there's a bit of a race to the bottom in test batting standards but it could also be a cyclical thing with a return to higher totals in future

I have not looked at the #s but top teams are playing more against each other relatively speaking

If more tests are played v WI, SL, BD, etc.,  the #s will look better. For Ind, the #s of the past batsmen are not great when both McGrath & Warne played, in SA esp. v Donald-Pollock for e.g.

Test matches after 2014 are far more exciting and riveting than earlier.

Most big teams have high quality pace attacks who know how to take wickets and bowl hostile bouncers.

And batsmen who score runs usually score quickly too.

There were lots of boring draws in the 1980s and 1990s.

Manju is missing those boring tuk tuk centuries for personal record and those boring draws.
