Arguments for Kuldeep at Gabba

  1. 1. Should Kuldeep get a place in our XI in 4th test?

1. In absence of Bumrah and with Ashwin struggling to recover physically, we lack an X-factor bowler who can pick 2-3 quick wickets in a burst and change the course of the innings. Among those who are yet to play this series Shardul is a steady workhorse and white ball specialist Nattu can't be an option in test arena.

2. Kuly did well in the last Aus tour, in Dharamsala 2017, will have good memories against Aus. And more importantly there will be a certain level of fear/caution when Aussies see the Chinaman's name on the team sheet. They aren't used to the angle/variations he brings in, and scars from previous series will be in the back of their minds.

3. Brisbane was Warne's favorite venue in Aus. Kuly is no Warne but extra bounce at Gabba will help the young wristy.

4. Ashwin is struggling with back spasms, may not be able to bowl him in long spells. Need someone to share the workload.

5. Kuly-Ash will compliment each other well if we are defending a target in 4th innings on days 4/5. Different kinds of bowlers, and if needed Ash can switch to defensive mode allowing Kuly to attack from the other end without worrying too much about E/R.

6. Kuly has experience at the highest level. This bowling unit is raw, could do with more test caps.

7. Kuly a better batsman than Nattu/Saini/Siraj, at par with Shardul IMO. Plus as LHB, he can help the batsman at the other end, be involved in a crucial partnership with Rahane or Pant.

8. 5 bowlers is a must, Ash not fully fit and the way our tail bats can't rule out the possibility of more broken fingers and ribs.

9. Kuly's lack of mental strength is often cited, sometimes even exaggerated. But under the leadership core of Rahane, Ashwin, Pujara, Rohit he will get backing/support he isn't used to....he will find them more like supportive elder brothers (watch Vihari say this about Ashwin on BCCI twitter account). Skipper Kohli is more like an intimidating boss. Amazing team spirit now making it easier for all players esp rookies/newcomers, Rahane especially has done an excellent job in this regard.

10. Smith is our number one threat now.....apart from Ashwin (and maybe Siraj with new ball) I see only Kuly with the ability to get him out for a low score. Keep Smith quiet and our chances improve exponentially. Fail to do so and we will be under the pump again.

As I mentioned in some other thread I want:

Thakur in place of Bumrah

Kuly in place of Jaddu

Saha in place of Hanuma

Focusing on Kuly here because he can be a match-winner unlike the other 2.

This TM will bring out the best in all players, hell Vihari was public enemy number one till 36 hours back and what he did yesterday with one leg will go down in cricket history as one of the greatest 'mind over matter' feats. VVS Laxman and Graeme Smith level resilience!!!!!

Similarly we will see a better version of Saha with the bat, Thakur at his 'workhorse' best and better version of Kuly. Even his harshest critics will admit that Kuly close to his best is world class and genuine match-winner.

I think Kuldeep has to play now..  Our bowling lacks penetration & Aussie batters are somehow not able to play spin properly this series & Kuldeep is a different beast when there is a slip & short leg in place.

Gabba has bounce & zip which Kuly craves & he has said many times that he loves bowling with Kookaburra.  He should be a lock for the 4th test Imo & Aus may not even expect him playing.

Whats the point of Sundar when you have an offie of Ashwin's calibre?

He calls himself all-rounder, so maybe they think he can replace Jadeja

Tbh TOI has been garbage with their speculations in this tour. They said kl will play ahead of gill and thakur will play ahead of saini. Just outrage-bait headlines for clicks and shares

This will be our last 6 batsmen then against Australia bowlers.

Saha

Ashwin
Thakur

Kuldeep

Saini

Siraj

So when 4th wicket falls Saha comes in 135/4 will have a good probability of 172 all out. Thats the risk. Remember everyone knows Ashwin has a backache and problem so theyll target his ribs. Just one innings doesnt redeem him for last two years of abject batting.. if it rains ( high chances) we just need to bat nicely for one innings...

Number 9 is the  most important. Rahane has backed every single young player in the squad Kohli hasn't in recent months - Pant, Gill, Siraj, Saini and to an extent Vihari. Kuldeep would do equally well as those guys under a better leader. Or a better way to put it is he will be less afraid of failure.

I do hope Rahane will show faith and pick him. Could be the turning point of Kuldeep's career.

Ashwin shouldn't play if he is not fully fit.

Kuldeep can replace Ashwin.

Sundar may replace Jadeja.

Saha will replace Vihari as Pant can bat but won't be able to keep.

Sundar would be a terrible pick I think.  His batting is nothing home to write about but I don't think he'll contribute with the ball much.  If TM wants Pant to keep that opens up a spot for specialist batsman.  Kuly is no mug with the bat & has good technique & he has survived seaming conditions in an ODI in Dharamsala.  We all know what he can do with the ball.

1. We don't have any specialist fit batsman left, barring an out of form Shaw.

2. Pant is not fit enough to keep.

3. Sundar is a good enough batsman at FC level, especially in recent times.

4. A 5th bowler does not need to be a great bowler ... He just has to bowl in the right areas.

5. My preferred pick is actually Tyagi ... but I stated what I expect rather than what I want.
