putrevus Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 I guess, in that case, you have not seen him actually bat in test matches but have just checked his FC stats and forming an opinion based on that.No , I am not basing my opinion him due to his stats.Thakur, Sundar have done exceptionally well in the chance they have received but they would not become core players.I don’t think either of them have talent to become core players.Sundar will plateau soon in my opinion. Let us say he is Indian version of Steve Smith ,he will get plenty of chances to go back to FC cricket and become an opener. Batsmen who can bowl are a vital commodity in Indian cricket. But I wouldn’t make him an opener based on these three innings.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Rahane needs to earn his place as player first then we will discuss about him becoming captain. Rohit is the opener for this series , if he flops Mayank is there . Sanju Manju said after the gabba victory that Thakur may not play after this because he is playing more of a bowling allrounder and as a backup to the first pick bowlers. If you ask him to play as a batsmen, he would probably struggle. He also said that Sundar may have a chance since he is young and can be the allorunder spot in the future when Jadeja/Ashwin retires. Sundar looks more of a batsmen than a bowler. I'm with @express bowling that he has a good technique, knows where the off stump is. I can also add that his head is still through the shot which makes him more balanced, leaves the short pitched deliveries with minimum fuss Edited February 8, 2021 by Real McCoy express bowling and raki05 2

There is a reason why I did not add Thakur in that list. He is a Kohli favourite, isn't going anywhere. On Rohit, will wait till there again is s demands for Kohli to be sacked from LOI captaincy and replaced by Rohit (hopefully after the IPL). You'll be after him like you are after Rahane now (as predicted after the Aus series) Edited February 8, 2021 by ShoonyaSifar raki05 1
RajBan Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 Rohit should continue to play in Test matches no matter what. Its a different thing that he might not be too interested or too old to show any tenacity to play gritty innings but he deserves a place in Test matches given his tons of runs in flat ODI pitches against toothless bowlers. raki05, express bowling and Sgattick10 3

express bowling Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 What I found really impressive about Sundar's batting today was the way he was playing deliveries spinning in from the rough. One of the toughest things to do ... but he looked totally at ease. Used his long legs to either smother the spin on the front foot or went on the backfoot with swiftness. Lone Wolf 1

If he succeeds (which most likely he will), their master will be shamed for not using him properly at RCB. The bits and pieces tag is also aimed at justifying the incompetence of Captain LOL. He just cannot spot a talent and help him realise his potential

Sometimes individuals have more skill and talent than it seems. Ganguly and Sachin both had raw skills of good bowlers but given their image as premium batsmen for the team they lost that touch gradually. Likewise Ashwin had serious batting credentials but his fitness caused serious regression in recent years. Sundar has been perceived as a bowling all rounder until recently but looks like he is a pretty strong bat. Infact given that he is not an out and out strike bowler so far, batting probably is his stronger discipline in Test atleast. I don't know whether we should compare him with Smith but he has the ingredients to be a frontline batsman and looks to be somebody who can play in different conditions and different types of bowlers as opposed to some in this very team who are giants in pattas but fattus in a more competitive environment. Forget Smith, if Sundar can be nearly as consistent as Labushagne, it's time to say goodbye to one of the seniors within the team. Maybe Sundar is actually as good as these seniors if not better. maniac Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 Not this thread again. I repeat Rohit averages 88 at home and was scoring 100’s for fun and even after his so called flop test career, averages in the 40’s and already has one of the most 6’s hit ratio in tests. Not to forget his slip catching and ability to chip in with a couple of overs and most importantly his leadership ship skills on the field. Prabhdeep Singh 1
Clarke Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 Rohit will score in India. It's Rahane that should be dropped if he fails tomorrow.

Hahane has done literally jack. Rohit deserves one chance and clearly he failed vs Bangladesh as well. Time for Mayank next match. Rahane is a good captain but he is not good enough as a batsman. Anyone can captain this Indian team. Kohli messes up selections and that's his flaw.

Sundar hasn't played a lot, so may be teams haven't found an obvious weakness. But in all the innings he has played, he is always been in control of the situation, I haven't seen a bowler troubling him too much. Granted this will change when teams start making plans for him, but as of now he is a solid player. People think of him as bits & pieces because his primary role in the team was supposed to be bowler who can bat a bit, but it looks like he is a primarily a batsman who can bowl too. The sooner they realize this, the sooner the tag will go. Edited February 9, 2021 by IndianRenegade BacktoCricaddict, Lone Wolf and express bowling 3

Exactly. ! Some people often confuse the means to an end and think it as the end. Doing well in FC is just a mean to the end of doing well in tests. And Sundar is doing that. Moreover, people often forget that test cricket is FC cricket too ... and Sundar is gathering FC experience at the highest level. To those who are oblivious, tests are considered part of his FC career Also since performance in tests > FC, asking him to go back to FC and prove himself is a dumb thing to do. The only scenario that happens is if a person fails in tests that he should prove himself in FC. Its fine if some other player is waiting in the wings who can do better. But Sundar is more than equipped to do a better job. He has two test 50s in two tests and he has looked good and composed Edit: I didnt read that bolded part. spot on Edited February 9, 2021 by Real McCoy express bowling and nevada 2
