England star all-rounder Ben Stokes' mention of India's intent during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in his new book has stirred a new controversy. Former Pakistan fast bowler Sikander Bakht has claimed that Stokes in his new book 'On Fire' has mentioned that India deliberately lost to England, to eliminate Pakistan from the qualifying race for the semi-finals.

 

Ben Stokes has written that when MS Dhoni came in to bat, Team India needed 112 runs to win in the remaining 11 overs and he batted in a bizarre fashion. Stokes questioned Dhoni's intent when the side was chasing 338 runs against the hosts.

Stokes also questioned Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's partnership and sensed something off, but he later denied that claim.

In  the 38th match of the 2019 World Cup, India could manage only 306/5 and lost the match by 31 runs. Indian fans were pretty upset with how the team lost that game as MS Dhoni and KEdar Jadhav returned unbeaten but still they couldn't chase the score

Dhoni scored 42 runs in 31 balls, while Jadhav accumulated 12 runs in 13 balls. When the two players joined, Team India needed almost 10 runs per over, however, there was no urgency to be seen from any of the two batsmen, after which both Kohli and Dhoni's intent were questioned as England's win meant, Pakistan were out of the semi-final race.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who was in the commentary box back then had also expressed his surprise at the way Dhoni and Jadhav batted.

This kind of thing is very hard to prove. Ultimately did not have any impact on india's group ranking. Obviously there is a lot of bjp involvement in bcci top brass and there may have been political pressures. In that case, I really wont blame the players.

 

From a viewing point, it was terrible to watch. I felt like we gave up on the world cup that day. Chasing 338 against england would have sent a note to all teams. Rohit and virat should have been blamed too. Easily they could have upped the ante without losing wicket so that it was 85/90 for the last 10 overs, not 110.

yeah I never bought the NRR excuse from Dhoni. India was already group topper and every other team lost atleast twice so nrr was irrelevant for us

Think you guys are over estimating the ability of Dhoni and jhadav. India could have chased it down yes but not with those 2 in the middle. With Rahul and Pant, sure.

Dhoni and jadav have screwed India in similar manner on multiple occasions in the past, while deliberately trying to take the game till the last over. Nothing new.

 Why blame him now ? Need more conclusive  evidence to make such claims, petty statements like above by some overrated Allrounder won't do it.

Looks like old news..  But India never was in the chase tbh.  As soon as Rohit was gone writing was on the wall. 

Our middle order was non existent.  Dhoni Jadhav pulled something similar in an ODI series decider vs England earlier & were booed lmao.

Dhoni was doing the same thing even in the semis, Jadeja somehow fluked a batting performance which we rarely see from him & that got us close

It was not deliberate, it was just a case of waning abilities of a batsman in terminal decline hogging a crucial spot in the middle order. Most cricket fans & the opposition knew Dhoni was not a threat anymore if the target in upwards of 300

In IPL he still hasnt retired despite how crap he has become just because he recognizes he's a brand now, and despite all the fame and money he doesn't give a f if CSK is hurt because of him. He knows how much star power he has, that if he played nice guy, he'll be remembered forever.

Moreover chances are he didnt dive in the semi because in the modern era of cricket, he wanted to remain the only winning indian captain. Ofc theory, but a theory i honestly believe since watching his career unfold

Ben Stokes is one of the smartest and wisest guys out there who is extremely mature, im glad this is coming from him.

We lost the match deliberately means we could have won it… coming from stokes its great to hear he regards dhoni jadhav so highly ( shame which we icfers dont loll) .. i guess residual memories of jadhavs two herculean innings against them played a part in stokes thinking..

Ben *in Stokes obviously missed the test Dhongi played at Lord's(?) right in the middle of the last tour to England in 2018, Stokes is *ingly s*** dumb! I bet this was fixed as well
