Kohli is BCCI's instrument of revenge-lite on the Brits for 200+ years of colonialism.

Basically BCCI are mocking them. Saying look, we beat you at test cricket, a game you invented, in your home in conditions favourable to you. And to add insult to injury, we did it with Kohli as the captain!

If this Indian team does not beat beat up Anderson and other useless bowlers and very shaky England batting line up then it does not deserve any accolades.

This Indian team has to do well in knockout matches to increase his legacy.

But the OP is talking about test cricket, not LOIs. LOI cricket is lottery.

It is Kohli’s vision of playing with five bowlers and putting emphasis on fitness which has made this team very good . If they had raised their level in knockout matches then it would be competing as one of the greatest teams.

Unlike Dravid who stopped playing five bowlers once he lost matches.Kohli has continued playing with five bowlers.

Unlike any Indian captain he has made fast bowlers attack relentlessly and if some morons think it is not visionary then no one can help them.

But he needs some icc trophies to be counted as one of the greatest captains. He failed big time in last icc knockout matches in both formats,

What is  "his" vision? Did he say anywhere? Or did he write a book on that?

Captaincy has a lot of tangibles and intangibles to be linked with only wins. Poor teams can have great captains too ... Winning or losing tosses is also not related to captaincy.

The factors to judge captaincy include:

  • Team culture
  • Team building
  • Team selection
  • On field decisions including bowling changes and field placements
  • Innovation

Some of the great test captains are (in no particular order and for various/different reasons):

  • Mark Taylor: Inherited a strong team but brought in a culture of always going for wins. Warne got good backing through attacking field placements.
  • Clive Lloyd: After WI were grounded to earth by Aus' pace attack, Lloyd focused on developing a fast bowling centric team.
  • Martin Crowe: A big motivator who led from the front. Brought innovations like opening with a spinner in ODIs and leveraging on the PPs (later perfected by SL in 1996)
  • Ranatunga: A captain who utilized its resources well based on player's strengths. Guys like Jayasuriya and Kalu were brought up to open. Shrewd with on field tactics as well.
  • Imran Khan: Focused on building a great team by scouting players. Also adapted horses for courses policy on many occasions. Good with on field tactics as well. Led a team of maverick cricketers, many of them could be difficult to manage, well.
  • Allan Border: Brought in stoic qualities to a young Australian side, rebuilding the team to become the dominant force in the 21st century.

Kohli bhakt- it was kohli's vision to play 5 bowlers

Bull ****

It started under dhoni, kohli just carried on.

  • in 2012 home series against eng i think in last test jaddu played as all rounder
  • then against aussies at home in 2013 jaddu played as all rounder, it was bhajji who was 2nd spinner in 1st-2 test and then Ojha in last 2
  • Jadeja proved that he can play as bowler but his batting didnt give much confidence
  • in 2013 n 2014 tour our bowlers struggled when opposition piled on big scores...................so a need was felt to have 5th bowler who doesnt weaken our batting
  • Then next overseas we picked binny in 1st 2 test and won lords................binny saved 1st test with bat. Then Dhoni wanted to give rohit chance so he tried going back to six but again went to jaddu n binny.
  • Now jaddu or binny didnt give much confidence with bat or ball overseas that time
  • Kohli then continued this from SL tour with binny

Compare to now when as cricketer is at peak and their was pandya who was an upgrade on binny and now Sundar , Axar (at home)..............just kohli has better options at his disposal

Visionary ka ghanta example dekho.....................saala when we use to play all rounder tab yahi bolte the bits n pieces ab visionary

Good post. But A captain is as good as the team. This team could have won more under him if not for some decisions in his selection more so in LOIs. Even Rahane won us a test series in Australia and decisive test at Dharmshala in 2017. He is big letdown in LOIs. Anyway good time to rejoice for Kohli fans. He definitely is not that bad as some people here have made him out to be, definitely upgrade over horrible days of Dhoni.

I know people have mocked him for his so called "template" this series but for once I'm just happy to see that Kohli has decided to make a decision and stick with it, for better or for worse.

Call it formulaic, but at least he has let the idea settle in for once. The players have responded by not letting him down.

Why did Dhoni abandon 5 bowler strategy after taking the lead in the series? Why abandon a winning formula for supposed safety?

Safety+ Rohit sharma

Rohit has always been hard for any captain to drop. Rohit the batsman always looked better option then binny and binny's bowling didnt come good in 2 test

In NZ, WI, Aus even kohli has gone for 6th batsman

nah Dhoni was just defensive. Also abandoned an easy chase in WI as we were 1-0 up and won the series
