What separates these two teams?

Our 7-11 have contributed far more and basically won us the two Tests

They have choked twice on the final day. We have choked once on day 1. I think India got the worse of the batting conditions. No choke is justified especially getting bowled out for 78, but England have choked on easier batting conditions. So I think in the end our bowlers are more adept over a range of bowling conditions.

I hear it is going to rain in the final test. So there will be clouds. If India runs into Anderson on a cloudy day  we could be in trouble again. Cloud can offset whatever the difference between the teams.

@OP don't be fooled by the second innings effort of India, India is a highly mediocre batting team themselves. Both batting lineups are prone to collapses & it was England's turn this match.

But where India won this game was the choice of fast bowlers, India had a more versatile bowling lineup unlike English trundlers who just relied on swing & clouds

Archer averages 31 SR of 62. Overrated.

Conditions will suit bowling first at Old Trafford.

Really think England have thrown away this series:

 

- bowled in more favourable conditions.

- threw away the Lord’s test with awful bowling to tailenders.

- missed a chance to bat India out of the game here on day 2.

We are blessed to have a group of individually driven players who want to answer their critics - Bumrah, Rahul, Umesh and to an extent Pujara. Some who have a grudge against their own TM  - Rohit, Pant, Shardul - all of them unwanted by the TM before/during Aus series, got an opportunity and haven't looked back.

 

Anyone who credits the clown for such fightback will be dishonest. He definitely played his part yesterday but like the team showed in Australia, they are capable of achieving and setting bigger and better benchmarks.

I meant that the Ashwin problem is our own making - he is fit and available but the Team management does not select him. I don't think it can then be used as an excuse. Rest of the examples are that of injured players who are unavailable for selection.

Yes  Aware of that. 36 all out 78 all out  India got all out under 200 , 9 times in the last 2 years alone. Most surprising aspect was Indian tail wagging. Suddenly going from the worst tail in the world to above average tail. England didn't have any weapon to knock of the tail. When they had, they indulged in short stuff and gave the match back to us on a platter.
