The Indian camp in England was thrown into a tizzy as soon as the second Indian physio, Yogesh Parmar, returned a positive result on a Covid test on September 1. The players' apprehension stemmed from the fact that Parmar had treated at least eight players in the days leading up to his positive test result marking all of those players as close contacts.

The anxiety didn't subside even when the first round of RT-PCR tests cleared all the players given subsequent tests could throw up positive results while the Test match was on. Eventually, BCCI strongly backed the senior players' refusal to play the Test. With Ravi Shastri in isolation in London, the Indian position at the discussion table was taken up by the captain Virat Kohli and senior batsman Rohit Sharma vociferously.

The board also did its own diligence. A BCCI office-bearer told this website that it had sought the opinion of independent outside agencies which advised against playing the game. The office-bearer did not disclose the name(s) of the agencies but it is learnt that the discussions extended late into Thursday night. The negotiations resumed on Friday morning when the BCCI promised to fulfil the commitment at a later date if the ECB agreed for a postponement.

Given that World Test Championship points are at stake, whether the ECB will accept the offer or take the matter to the ICC's disputes resolution committee is a different matter, but it is unlikely that the Indian team can play a Test before next 10 months. With their schedule so packed, a Test can be squeezed in only when India travel to England for a six-match white ball series next July.

Even as the potential financial implications are still being counted in England, in India broadcaster Sony Sports cannot escape some serious losses. It can't cut payments to about two dozen commentators it has engaged for the series. With the series so keenly fought, a fifth Test 10 months later is unlikely to have some interest as today. Besides, it has to re-book the commercial slots for the match 10 months on, should it happen, at all.

Meanwhile back in England, the Indian team is now preparing to leave for Dubai to prepare for the IPL. Originally, they were to fly on a charter flight on September 15, along with English players, umpires and commentators. Now efforts are being made to transport them to the UAE at the earliest. If sources are to be believed, the players will be out of England in the next couple of days, if not exactly in 24 hours.

Legal Point

The clause 16.12.1 of ICC's World Test Championship playing conditions state, "Any matches that do not take place due to the Acceptable Non-Compliance of one or both Parties (as defined in the World Test Championship Competition Terms) shall not be taken into account in the calculation of the Points Percentage."

Does India's decision to not play come under acceptable non-compliance clause, which, in legal parlance means, they cannot be faulted for a default. This could be the bone of contention between the BCCI and ECB if the matter ends up at the ICC's disputes resolution committee.

It will be up to the legal luminaries of both sides to prove or disprove if India's decision to not play at Old Trafford is under acceptable non-compliance clause. If so, India will lose nothing. If not, the series result could end being 2-2.

What about VC Rahane and the rock Pujara. What was their stance.

In any case, it is difficult to assess if the senior players took the stand for player's safety or for the sake of IPL?

Should've taken a strong stance before the test series to cancel it altogether and gone straight to IPL…

 

Why can’t BCCI organise IPL through out the year and earn huge sums of monies. Players too could earn more. 
 

What next IPL edition in USA and Europe. Even an UK edition too. 
 

Player Families can use these trips to travel to new places and if given a chance, do shopping & dine out.

Trouble happens with Rohit around: 

  • 2019 ODI WC post SF controversy (creating camps if I am not wrong)
  • IPL injury-Aus tour controversy 
  • In Aus, ignoring protocol controversy (eating out) 
  • In Eng, the last test controversy

Rock of Saurashter (chota Gibraltar) Pujara?  Abey he’d want to play even if had to crawl to the ground.  Uska kahan IPL ya 2020 WC.  His show is done for a while after this, maybe even permanently.
