Got hit on the Helmet by Srinath who seems to be going across to ask if he's okay but Ponting just yells backs at him.

 

What an attitude. During the late 90s,  the Australians did treat the Indians as nobodies.

 

Compared to before, the current crop  of Aussie Cricketers like Warner , Maxwell, Smith etc have mellowed down so much .

While the current crop is softer...  The peak Aussie line up had an aura.  They are taught to play that way since beginning.  Sporting culture of Australia is structured that way.  You can't afford to be a softie. 

Kapil Dev once in a interview said Aussies during his days were brutal on the field & lots of stuff was said. 

Last most aggressive player & captain I have seen in Michael Clarke...  He always had that fire n passion in him.

When you're not that great a side, u become soft that's what the this current crop is also the backlash they got from public for being ultra aggressive and abusive mellowed them to an extent.

There was a misunderstanding here I reckon, ponting must have thought Srinath was trying sledge after hitting him on the helmet or he just played the game hard and was expected no remorse from the opposition after being hit,  Aussie cricketers try act tough and a lot of it is manufactured, every time India put them under pressure in the 90s Aussies folded pretty quickly, sharjah storm, the test hammering in Bangalore 98, 2001 Eden gardens, the only real standout characters were Steve Waugh and Alan border.

Most were like that, I have seen Hayden mock Indian accent and they use to have a lunch time show mocking Indians and brown people. Downright racists.   Gavaskar gave it back, and the Maaki episode and Syd test harakiri was the ultimate straw for us to hate the whole team with venom. Took a change of whole generation of players to get some of us to support them. That is why 2005 Ashes is the greatest test series as well as 2001 in India. Everybody wanted them to lose. Bloody cheats!! Now IPL/PCB is a job market for their retirement income

In contrast we had soft players. Srinath was a very down to earth and carried this nice guy image. Generally Karnataka players from the 90s (Srinath, Prasadh, Dravid, Kumble) had this image. Even among them Srinath was the meekest. But even they had to show their aggressive nature from time to time.  Slater vs Dravid, Kumble vs Australian side, Prasad vs Sohail.

It's because we were pussies back them. Everything changed post ganaguly era. We fight back hard. 

 

Plus lot of the swearing and slurs won't be tolerated in the modern era.

Aussie team had lot of such characters.

Look at Slater here fighting Dravid because he didn't walk after Slater's signal.

So many fans of that era miss this, they all drink the kool-aid and marketing hype on "tough aussies".  If you have the skills to challenge them and the conditions don't nullify your skills, you could compete with them.  But if you let them dominate you, then just like any bully they'd stomp you.

Just a Jack Ass, wanted to show that you have not hurt me bowler, go Eff Yourself and go back to bowl. I miss this kind of aggression in cricket. Sadly IPL and other T20 leagues have narrowed the competition and cricket has become a very friendly game.

Not friendly but professional. Cricketers have become gym manufactured machines who play non stop cricket throughout the year.

Srinath was a nice guy but from all the footage available of him I find him to be a pretty aggressive guy, maybe it's just perception but srinath was never shy of a word or two, plus would give back to his own team mates if they miss fielded, also Kumble to was quite aggressive in body language.
