So what is the hype about Deepak Chahar?

Can someone enlighten me where I can find some examples of Chahar's much hyped batting prowess?

Opens batting for his state side in limited overs. Won a match batting for India against SL. Before you say it is only srilanka, same series where India lost T20 series and won the Odi series due to Deepak’s innings.

Go watch the highlights of the game because you clearly didn’t watch it live. It was very well calculated, proper knock.

I would say his batting is at the same level of Thakur.

By that yardstick Bhuvi has done it too, no?

Hard to not conclude that those clamoring for Chahar over Bhuvi are only doing so as victims of 'kuch nayaa lao' syndrome, and ageism.

Sure. Bhuvi was a very handy lower order bat. If Bhuvi was in his prime as a bowler it’s a no brainer but how come you don’t question Bhuvi’s relaibality? He has been injury prone or had to be “rested” in 4 tournaments now. Last 2 IPL’s, injured in the middle of the World Cup, dropped  in WT20, was not available for Nzl,Aus,Eng tour where he could have been useful. In fact in Aus even the net bowlers got debut due to injuries and Bhuvi was already injured.

Time to move on.

Chahar May be give or take better or worse that is debatable but is clearly younger, fittter, has showed promise in most opportunities he has got, an important member of his IPL side over the last 2-3 years.

So let me put the question back to you, why shouldn’t he be picked over Bhuvi?

He is not as bad as he played today. He resorted to too many slower balls today. When swing on offer he is a consistent threat.  But i agree either Bhuvi or Chahar has to play not both. Both are similar. Both can travel. But Chahar can bat down the order.

Let's start off with acknowledging the fact that I'm a Bhuvi fan, and have more belief and faith in his skillset than you.

Putting that aside, apart from Chahar's age, I don't see any other 'advantage' that he offers over Bhuvi.  As of now.  His bowling - at best - is still not at bhuvi's level.  I would say that Chahar on his best is still about 75-80% of the bowler that I expect bhuvi to be (assuming fitness).  Accusing a bowler of having "fitness issues" is silly according to me, because of the nature of fast bowling - all fast bowlers are always going to have to manage fitness-related availability.  Unless Bhuvi is injured, I don't see his fielding fitness as a liability either.

All in all, I think Bhuvi vs Chahar is 60-40 type of scenario - and I would not begrudge selecting Chahar over Bhuvi, provided there is some coherent plan to groom him as a batting option.  Which we both know isn't really the case. Because you aren't going to see Chahar being promoted up the order in games like these.

Many folks on ICF are 'bored' of watching Bhuvi and they want 'NEW' faces and names, for the sake of newness.  I don't subscribe to that herd mindset.  And not just when its Bhuvi - also applies to other players.

Even setting aside my personal preferences, I would be in favor of not only benching Bhuvi, but omitting him from squads when the time comes  - given the next T20 WC timeframe, I don't think we are there just yet.

Bhuvi is an Anderson-type bowler with his ability to move the ball both ways, without major discernible 'tells'.  That is a special quality to me, coupled with his proven ability to bowl at the death, makes me conclude that he offers value to the Indian team.   Even today.

If Chahar offers equivalent capability with the ball, I'm all for backing a younger player.  But I dont see that.  Nor do I see any meaningful value-add with the bat from Chahar.  Its marginal - at best.

And all of this, of course is subjective - my opinion.  Not claiming it to be gospel fact.

Bhuvi is an Anderson-type bowler

You don’t need to add that disclaimer :giggle:

Look I know what you meant but Anderson at 40 keeps going on and on and his utility has been maximized.

Bhuvi is not reliable. Now you can’t blame injury on a player I agree but the word is “reliability” . If a player is being cleared and constantly leaving the team hanging, then either he needs to take some responsibility or the powers that be that manage players should.

Did not look like that in the World T20 just completed. Bhuvi was disposed and Shami kept playing and going at 10 an over.

I dont care who thinks what, overall career says Bhuvi better than Shami for T20.

That was because Bhuvi was clearly unfit. Else even a half fit Bhuvi was preferred over fully fit and firing Shami in 2019 WC. I have lost count of number of times Bhuvi has straight away come into the national team after long injury layoffs. A match or two in domestic cricket and he gets back into the 11 as if he is irreplaceable.

Anderson has quite a few added qualities.

He is a much taller bowler with a much higher release point. So, along with the difficult-to-pick swing direction, the batsman has to contend with natural bounce with his length balls.

Anderson has a good bouncer too and he uses them judiciously to push the batsmen on the back foot when the the degree of swing decreases. Bhuvi has usually lacked this ability except 2017 and early 2018.

Moreover, Anderson plays red ball cricket only and that ball swings for a large part of the day in his home country.

While Bhuvi, a classical swing bowler, plays white ball cricket ... and the ball stops swinging after 4 overs or so.  I don't think Anderson would be that successful if he played white ball cricket in Asia, Australia etc.

also Anderson still bowls 140K’s in tests and stay fit and win matches for his side and is a bonafide red ball ATG while Bhuvi bowls 130-135 harmless line and length balls and a 120k knuckle ball. I don’t remember the last time he got swing.

I think he rarely hits that pace. In the IPL i started tracking his pace in one of the match. He bowled at 124 kph. Thought it was a slow ball. Then next 5 balls were delivered at the same pace. Then the entire match. That is when i realize that is his normal pace.
