Don't like him for n number of reasons but really appreciate him to acknowledge that

Really wished he kept his huge ego aside and had ears to sane advices from his senior teammates and coaches in the past and didn't go with ridiculous selections

I can go on and on,but i appreciate what he said here

And M.Shami also said this  ...

Quote

"Yes, we've had support staff who've always been with us, to support our skills, but you can't name one person. It's the result of the work we've put in over the last 6-7 years, so I give credit to that hard work, and the credit should always go to the person who's put in that hard work."

Somebody is trying to share a part of the credit :p:

Shami went to his childhood coach to improve his fitness using dehati methods. At one point he looked unfit and pretty much done but has made a remarkable comeback. The credit for his success should go to him and his coach.

Definitely it improved our winning record overseas. Ishant played with more than 2 bowling units. But his performance improved only in the last 4 years with current unit.  Captains were reluctant to play that 4th pacer overseas. But little we realize how much difference it makes. Also Bharat Arun played a role in devising strategies. It tells you one thing. Better bowling unit wins you more matches than Better batting unit. We had a gun batting unit in the 2000s. But we never thought about playing  5 genuine bowling options.

Problem is we never has a proper all rounder.

Also our past batting greats barring Tendulkar are vastly overrated. Most struggled on difficult surfaces. Ganguly was useless outside Asia. Odd performance here and there.

Sehwag was a sitting duck outside Asia and Australia.

Dravid had his moments but he dint too all that well in australia and south africa.

Dhoni is Dhoni.

On tough kiwi tracks we folded many times.

I think it was because our batting had its weak spots: Dravid in SA/Oz (apart from '03), VVS in Eng/SA (apart from clutch knocks), Sehwag in Eng/SA, Gangu in Oz/SA. Only Goddy was doing consistently everywhere, even in the 00s. other issue was lack of spin-ARs as we have now: Ash, Jaddu, and recently Axar. Dhoni was also not suited for batting at 6 outside Asia (barring Eng)

Ofcourse, When ever someone retires their prowess multiply 50 times in all future comparisons and when ever their name ends with 'kar' they are automatically greatest of all time and their exploits and greatness is multiplied by a further factor of 10.

I mean we have one of the most fragile batting line up right now. Even with this we take the risk of playing 5 bowlers. India could have tried 5 bowlers with guys like Irfan pathan that could bat.

him being made to function as an AR is partly what destroyed his bowling. we were hampered by lack of options.

I dont even rate Tendulkar tbh but he has played some great knocks. He never had the bowling attack we do now to support him and fab 4 members.

Before you guys rush to credit Kohli for quicks, ask this: Which *new* pacer received Captain Coolie's full throated backing?

Answer: NONE

Not even Siraj. He pays lip service to quicks but nothing to show in terms of grooming new quicks for tomorrow. He rode the crest of bowlers who were bequeathed by the much maligned Dhoni - Ishant, Umesh, Shami. Do not mention Bumrah, he's a sui generis talent.

When Kohli is dumped out of leadership in tests, will the new skipper have any quick to call on who was mentored under Kohli? None. In fairness, we can say much the same for batsmen as well.

Dhoni was the one who championed the 4 quicks strategy in 2014 but just didn't have the resources so had to make do with guys like S Binny. Kohli is going to claim credit for Siraj but he himself got his debut only by chance and probably 2 yrs too late anyway. Still he does deserve some credit imo, older guys like Ishant, Shami and Umesh have done well under his captaincy even if guys like Arun also have some input there.

For being at the right place at the right time. Yes, he can claim that.

people giving him credit are doing it for revolutionizing fitness culture and backing fast bowlers. He deserves some credit surely?

The fitness nonsense is a PR gimmick. Were the likes of Umesh/KL/Mayank any less fit before Kohli came along? Has Shami/Rohit become fitter since Kohli assumed charge?

Kohli and his PR did make a song and dance about fitness but the real change came when NCA/IPL/foreign coaches etc silently worked in this area since IPL started. It's a cumulative effect, not a one man revolutionizing anything.

I will credit Kohli for turning fitness into an excuse for dumping someone like Pant for 2 years in favor of Saha. He can have that as credit.

Shami becoming fitter coinciding with Kohli's reign is definitely a thing but it's anyone's guess if that is all down to just Kohli. Someone on another thread said he went and worked on it with his childhood coach.

Has Kohli revolutionized Indian Fast bowling  ?

" For " Arguments ....

1)  Shami, Umesh and Ishant were there for a long time but became good test match bowlers only during Kohli's reign.

2)  Kohli has kept playing 5 bowlers in test matches despite having a weak batting unit. This has helped more pacers play.

3)  Supported fitness culture in Team India in a strong way. This has helped the Indian fast bowlers definitely.

" Against " Arguments ....

1)  Has not been able to develop a single new and young fast bowler. Siraj's debut was delayed by 2 years and ultimately played tests only when multiple older quicks are injured simultaneously.

2)  In white ball cricket he has played trundlers mostly. Apart from Bumrah ( who any captain will pick anyway ) it has mostly been trundlers. Shami was dropped during the WC 2019 SF match despite being in red hot form. (  While we have seen trundler lover Dhoni play Shami and Umesh in tandem in WC 2015. )

3)  Shastri is a big supporter of Fast bowling in tests, along with B.Arun, and this must have had some influence on lots of Fast bowlers playing and doing well in test matches. It was probably not just Kohli's influence alone.

4)  His support has always been for older established pacers at the cost of young talent. I would not want Kohli to be the captain if I were a young and upcoming fast bowler knocking on the doors of Team India.

yes, on balance, there are things he's done right and things he's done wrong; just like any other captain. One can only hope that the next captain will carry on the legacy on building a potent fast bowling attack. there are already worrying signs of regression to trundler culture, especially in LOIs with Boobi, Deepak Chahar, etc. reigning supreme. Even Shardul has been trundling as of late.
