With Siraj out or basically bowling at less than 70% of his capacity, 300 is needed.

 

India from this point onwards need their last 8 wickets to make 250 runs. Tough task, but not impossible.

 

Rahane, Pujara playing for their test careers. Vihari can support and Pant can increase the scoring rate.

Dont discount the Lord having all round match here with the bat.

Siraj is out, Boom is trundling or proving to be "unlucky", Ashwin is a non-entity, and Lord is unlikely to replicate 1st innings heroics. A lot will depend on Shami. We will need to set a total of 350+ to be safe, although anything over 250+ has some chance of winnings.

Fans of a certain generation think this way.  Given our years and years of less than fierce bowling units.  I don't blame you, I've got part of me trained to think that way too... Even with Siraj not 100%, I think India can win with 250 on the board.

agreed. the more you remember of indian cricket, the less confident one gets. the fleeting but memorable successes of 70s and 80s, the home dominance (but pathetic overseas performance) of 90s, the occasional overseas wins of 00s, etc

200 runs is enough to win but getting there will be hard. Collapse is imminent, as @adi B said need some lucky runs from Pant, Thakur & Ashwin. 

Once target goes past 160, Elgar will start panicking.

Lead wise, am with the 250 crowd. 200 can go either way, if Ashwin gets going then that's defendable too. Maharaj got one to turn and managed the outside edge in the last over, if that's a trend then we get to face some spin overs and Ashwin is in the game.

My bad, if Pujara & Rahane both can score 50s then anything below 500 is gettable.

Team was short by 70-100 runs in first innigs and another 50-70 runs in 2nd inning.

 

150 more would have made it par score.

let's be honest and admit we all got it wrong. this 240 is not enough feeling is only with the benefit of hindsight since even the dressing room seemed happy with our 2nd innings and many here felt that Saf didn't have a hope in hell of chasing this. its debatable if even 300 would have been enough.

In case of 240, last 50 runs are easy for team with bowling side being deflated and unable to attack.

 

200-3 with target of 375 is completely different ball game where teams can still attack. 

 

However Indian bowling was absolutely pathetic in 2nd inning just like batting in first inning.

Our weak batting is making every pitch seem tough/impossible to bat on. Any batsman whose ceiling is just 40-50 should be kicked out. The constant failure of the specialists is wearing out our bowlers and lower order. We can't expect miracles on a regular basis.

It is really funny to read all the previous posts of this thread. A lot of posters were like 250 is more than enough and only a few commented that 300 is safe.

But the way it went, even 300 would have been chased by the Saffers... India needed more than 350 to be really safe.

With the way India bowled, SA could have chased 300 comfortably, as I said originally, given we had a bowler not at 100% capacity and Ashwin ineffective, India needed 350+.
