Sgattick10
Ishant Sharma. Mark Boucher shouldn't be in that list. He was quite good. Was Michael Atherton bad? Never seen him play, thot he was one if those better Eng players Link to comment

Current crop can only dream of that. Even before tendulkars mumbai and pants brisbane chasing heroics, Ganguly scored a masterful 98 not out in 4th innings chase in Galle ( 264 target) against Sri lanka and murli in prime and won India its only test in the island nation between 1993 and 2008. 16 centuries ( plus two 99s) is not a bad return along with 7200 odd runs in test cricket. Pujara will even struggle to match that the way his average and score is plummeting.. adi B, LordPrabhzy, Norman and 3 others 2 4 Link to comment
Adamant
Ian Bell? An average of 42 for an English batsman is gold standard. I don't know why you considered putting him there also Saleem Malik was a pretty good batsman but still you can put him there coz of fixing and stuff but based on batting credentials he was great and doesn't deserve to be here. Michael Atherton was good too. Actually I think the title itself doesn't do justice to the players, someone who played 100 tests had a successful career, it's a bit like deciding who is the most poverty stricken man amongst a list of millionaires. Pujara has 5, Rahane has 4, KL Rahul has 4, Pant has 2 centuries in SENA and none of their careers is over. Also none of them scored centuries against greats bowlers like Peter Martin, Allan Mullaly, Chris Lewis, Dominic Cork, Min Patel, Mark Elham, Simon Doull, Chris Cairns, Dion Nash, Hoggard, Caddick, Tudor, Giles, Bracken and Andy Bichel and Gillespie. They got their centuries against average bowlers like Cummins, Hazlewood, Steyn, peak Anderson, peak Broad, Rabada, Ryan Harris, Starc etc. Yes current crop only dream of those. Pujara and especially Rahane should be eternally thankful to our pacers for converting their contributions into victories.. some of the most spectacular innings from previous gen turned into draws ( Brisbane/2003) or even defeats ( Sydney/2000) in the previous gen. Ganguly the batsman was eclipsed by Ganguly the captain. He may not pass the ICF test of greatness(has any batsman ever?) but he was a damn good batsman. One other point I would add is that while in current crop, we have to find "andhon mein kana raja", in the era in which Ganguly played, we had World class batsmen like Dravid, Tendulkar, Sehwag and Laxman. So the task for him was a lot easier as he often came in to bat when a good platform was already laid. It also meant that he blocked the place for other good domestic players like Amol Muzumdar, who never got a chance to play Test cricket. Being captain helped him retain his place in the team.
