Rohit sharma- when you go to Australia, you need someone with shot making ability and Sanju Samson definitely fits that criteria

Ishan Kishan.

I rate Sanju Samson as a better batsman if we are looking for back up keeper for Pant

Ishan scored a 50 on debut. Sanju is yet to cross 30 in 10 attempts.

Sure he 'looks' better but so far been a dud and we have plenty of options.

He may do better in ODIs but then again his List A career is poor too.

Lets see how he (Samson) goes in this SL series.

I however agree with Rohit's sentiment. Samson is someone who can hit from ball 1 and kind of batsman we require in the team. His consistency is the issue that he need to fix.

Another issue is where he'll bat. He prefers top 3 but its booked assuming Rohit Rahul and Kohli will be our top 3. So at best he can be backup.

These guys should try batting in MO in IPL etc because there its easier to find a spot.

Rohit Sharma falling into the classic trap of assuming he can predict success by watching a batsman's style of play. It's hubris.

RGS would do well to keep his head down and work quietly with the team he's given.

First you need to identify the batter with better skillset based on conditions you will encounter . Only if you choose potentially the right guy you can mold and prepare them .  Against pace this seems fine . But problem could be playing quality spin which has been very poor by Samson and second issue is he is very inconsistent .

Failure could be more from these factors . Need to see if these areas have seen any improvements in next 3-4 months. .

Maybe Rohit sees his younger version in Sson.. can't fault him.. i feel the same as well. Unfortunately Samson has practically no time and should do well now to make any impact. Such is the competition for places. Luckily he has Rohit as the captan who can give you the best opportunity to succeed. Hope he goes well! His shot making makes me want to watch cricket. The best quality for any batsman.

Who is No.4 in the starting XI? Shreyas? or can Samson fit there?

Ideally, he is backup opener if he does better than Ishan.. He can also be back up middle order.

Pant at 4,SKY 5, Venky/HP at 6.

Kishan can bat at both positions so will be preferred.

Ooh.. Forgot Pant..

In that case, Ishan/Samson will be back up opener..

And Shreyas and HP will be back up middle order..  SKY and Venky will play at 5/6

We don't have enough spots left as it is for existing players.  India has to look for players that fit  certain roles. What would be Samson's role here?

backup middle order shud still be open - iyer cannot be a good option for Aus and also samson can bat at open as well. So basically he can give u options like - backup opener, backup middle order and backup keeper not to forget he is a gun fielder. If he comes good we can add more variety in squad since he solves 3 purpose alone

he showed consisteny last yr

In SMA he avg 75 with a s/r of 141

In IPL he avg 40 with 136 s/r

I think he is at a stage now where he understands his game better , rest players like Samson needs great backing. Rohit wud understand since he went through something similar

we backed Pujara and rahane like lunatics in test. We gave Sanju 10 matches overall in last 10 years. Absolutely remarkable from selectors. We gave chances to kedar  jadhav dragged him along, we continued with dk, we gave chances to all n sundry like dubey, vijay shanker .. except sky n sanju.

Yeah Samson is not a bad option.  But he needs to make it count now.  He is seasoned now not that young anymore.  He failed massively in Sri lanka last year.  Upto him to make this chance count.  Same goes for Kishan as well although he has done better than Sanju so far.  Maybe Rohit Dravid will bring best out of Sanju

Naah. if players were to be discarded based on their first 10-12 games, both Rohit and Kohli will have no careers at all. Kohli never realised this despite having been backed by his then captains and coaches during his initial years. Rohit OTOH going by media statements, so far seems to understand this slightly better. Hope he backs Samson (and others).

Samson has the unique ability of hitting big against quality pace and is a proper middle order batsman. If given proper backing and clarity of his role (which he has at RR), he will settle well

Samson is talent without brain. Massive ability but temperament issues.

its not lack of brain, every batsman who is blessed with range struggle from this . They have more option so they take time to learn how to pick right options, guys like iyer n rayudu were considered smart batsman but not true again coz they were so limited so they based their game on limitations.

Guys like Rohit, yuvi or even someone like banton, pant now has struggled with same problem.

My sense he would be more successful against teams without a quality wrist spinner and plays more pace than quality spin. So could be better #6 , #2

Samson rarely employs sweep maybe the reason he struggles a bit vs wrist spin.  Iyer also has similar issues both look to hit down the ground against spin & mis time a lot.
