why impose 2018 as cutoff? better to start from end of 2019 where the dip is even more

Most probably cause his downfall as test batsman started since england tour in which he had point to prove and he was quite hungry as batsman. Not saying currently it is hunger issue but looks to be technical and he hasn't done anything great since that series. Since end of 2019 he has gone down even more.

Real question is can he keep it above 45 by the time he retires?

All those smith vs kohli discussions will look hilarious and ridiculous in future with 15 run difference between their averages

Let him loose commercial contracts. Tab line pe aayega. Till he is pulling the big bucks and getting selected he has no shame.

This is the Bollywood influence. Only in India he would find a place in the playing XI

Based on how he was looking early in the series, I really thought he would finally come clean with a big one. Well, we are down 3 tests now and he still can't get past the 20's. Every inning follows the same script - starts off looking assured and aggressive, but gets bogged down soon enough or has a brain fart (like yesterday). Just not good enough, bottom line. Limited range of strokes and limited concentration levels. Any other player in his position would have been dropped ages ago.

By the time he retires, his average would hv dropped down to 40 or maybe lesser.   But that won't bother him one bit.  He looks physically fit. (Unlike Fatman). Therefore, ad agencies will continue to shoot with him irrespective of Team Ind' performance. His PR team on SM is one of the strongest (and equally shameless).
