When will Shubman Gill cement his place in the side

As a cricket fan and admirer of Gill's talent, it's frustrating to watch him get started and then throw it away be it test matches or ODI cricket.

These cute 50s and 60s won't do, if he wants to have a long career, he has make these chances count. India has so many talented young players coming in, selectors and TM can only give him that many opportunities. It's upto him to lap it up make his presence felt. Play a few match winning knocks, to prove he belongs here.

What are your thoughts on Gill?

Played just 5 ODIs. So, he's just starting. May take a long time. Why was he dropped after two matches in NZ few years back?

He needs to do a Fakhar Zaman vs. Zimbabwe.

I think he needs a partner.  Partnership is very very key . Ganguly/Tendulkar later Sehwag/Tendulkar then Dhawan/Rohit.  Someone who can complement his game.  If Shaw clicks it will be great given that they played together at the under-19 level.

More than Gill, my anger is with Rahul Dravid. Here is a rare young talent who can serve Indian cricket for long time but he clearly need some guidance on how to build an innings. If Dravid cant fix this...what is the point of being coach?

Talent like Gill don't come very often in this T20 era. I mean look at the Indian batting line up...full of tulleybaaz like Hooda, Kishan etc. So when we get a complete batsman like Gill, it hurts if they dont justify their talent. He is going KL Rahul way...supremely talented but lack temperament. KL cant be taught at this stage anymore but Dravid should work with Gill like U19 days.

Because under kuptaan wrogn - top order batting slots are zamindari feudal jaagirs, not to be easily given up to younger talents.

When he gets consistent chances at the top...

Here are the occurrences of his ODI games..

March 2019

March 2019

December 2020

July 2022

July 2022

How on earth can someone "cement" his place in the XI by playing one game on average per year..

Even in tests, he's just a backup to Rohit, Rahul and Mayank and hasn't played two full series in a row even once so far.

And he hasn't even made his T20 debut.

And who told you that Dravid is not doing anything. It is also upto the players. Even the player might be trying. These are just small sample size and you and I have no idea what is going on behind the scenes

Again why does Gill had to be given a spot in all the three formats. He has already played 11 test and it is pretty clear unless he rectifies his technique he would struggle as an opener. He is another one dimensional player who does not bring anything else to the team.

He is being given chance now in odis , it is upto him to cement his place.

so what are Lord Putrevus's criteria that would have to be satisfied in order for him to "cement his place"?  These 2 ODIs that he has played gainst Windies, what is Lord Putrevus' verdict thus far?

Folks fail to realize that to succeed at the highest level it takes 10-15 games or more, for players to really figure things out and be able to execute somewhere close to their capabilities.  Everybody wants "instant" success, or else chuck them in the trash can. That is not how teams are built.  That's the Pakistani mindset.  Just look at how many batsmen they gave debuts to, and then threw out, over the last 15 years and you'll realize.

Come on now. Gill was tried in NZ before 2015 WC. He didn’t do that great.
