Ultimate_Game Posted March 23, 2025 Posted March 23, 2025 (edited) @rangeelaraja, the actual distance between the bowler and the batter is less than 22 yards. 22 yards is the distance between the stumps at both the ends. But the bowler delivers the ball from edge of the popping crease and also has another yard or so where the arm goes beyond the popping crease when the ball is released. Check out release point of pacers and you'll see how far ahead they're from the stumps. Also, batters generally stand around the batting crease line to avoid LBW and also to give them some room in case they want to rock on the back foot. You return 140mph serves by not reacting after ball had left the racket - that's impossible. You return it, by learning how to tell WHERE ball is gonna go before racket even makes contact with ball, based off of racket angle, ball toss etc. This is why speed is secondary to disguise for ball toss and why platform serve is far harder to read than pivot serve ( like Nadal, djokovic etc. Where they bring their legs together before jump..platform serve is when they jump with legs apart, like federer or sampras) and this is why 120mph Sampras serve was far harder to read and return than 120mph djokovic serve. Tennis players have to move half the court's length and at that speed it is just tougher. You won't see guys like Rohit there To be honest, this is more about rallies in tennis than returning serve - we dont move much in tennis either returning serve, as its just a lunge - pretty much similar to a batsman lunging out and smothering a spinner or lunging out for a square drive off of a pacer. And to be honest, high level tennis is less reacting and more predicting. When i used to play in my college days, i already knew which side of the court the ball would come back to in 90% of the cases, because i knew from angle of the racket, position of where i hit the ball, where the body position of the other player at point of contact is, to know if its cross-court or down the line. This predictability comes from playing at high level sufficiently enough that you develop your eye to look for small tells like this in real time. And you dont have to be that high level to do this prediction business well - decent NCAA level chaps can do it just fine and it works pretty much against all players except maybe a genius like Federer or a total flexible gumby like Djokovic. If we were all reacting by simple reflex after ball is hit, all tennis matches would have like 40 aces each and 90% of rallies would still be 4-5 shot rallies at max. As for Rohit - i dunno if Rohit would've mae it as a tennis player, but Ranatunga would've. Contrary to popular belief, tennis doesnt require a whole lot of speed. It requires serious agility, aka ability to start and stop at a dime and turn on a sliver like a ballerina. An agile fatty like Ranatunga would've done fine, assuming he had stamina to last 2-3 hrs. A fatty like Ranatunga would've done better in tennis than a skinny gaunt dude like Sidhu or Kuruvilla - who literally stopped like a train having inertia.... Hmm at elite level it'd not even a contest, batting is way more difficult than returning or rallying as a tennis guy. Mostly because we aren't afraid of the ball like we are in kirkut. The worst thing that can happen to you in tennis, ball-wise, is that you are playing doubles and your partner smashes a serve straight into the back of your skull or you return a serve, it hits the racket frame and ricochets into your crotch. Both have happened to me, both mean 5-10min break and shake it off. That's nowhere close to " you drank a gallon of your own blood coz the ball broke your nose" angle in tennis and the sweet spot of contact in tennis is like 4x larger than on a cricket bat.
