Rohit Sharma wanted to play against England and retire mid-series: Report

According to Sky Sports, a source told that Rohit planned to retire mid-way through the England tour, much like how MS Dhoni stepped away from the Test format, handing captaincy to Virat Kohli. However, the selectors wanted consistency in terms of leadership for the England tour and informed Rohit that he can be a part of the squad but won't be the captain. This prompted the experienced batter to draw curtains on his red-ball career with immediate effect. Five days later, Kohli followed his long-time friend into Test retirement.

This sense of entitlement is way over the top. No thought about the team. It's all about playing a couple of Tests and "retiring" in the middle of the series. Who does that and how is the team supposed to plan for it?!

Ya.. middle of the series retirement clearly point to that.Glad BCCI did not offer him a farewell series. Rahul Dravid one of the greatest Indian test batsmen did not get any farewell series.

Both need to be dropped from the ODI format also. We have a good number of players who can do much better than a 40 year old and a 39 year old at the next world cup!

Would have needed 1-2 more WTC cycles for that, and average would have fallen to low 40s, Azhar Ali territory. Sometimes BCCI must be given credit for making these tough decisions. Going by SM reactions, Rohit and Ko have been robbed by evil unjust BCCI, even Dada is being dragged through the mud.

Kohli is still fine, but two years later he will be even more declined, plus his fielding will cost us big time. He should step aside now when he has respectable form instead of waiting till he enters hopelessly irreversible decline!

an ageing great showing he’s still got it is one of the most compelling sights in sport. a tragedy for everyone he wasn’t able to reinvent himself!!

Rohit was a prolific player for Mumbai in FC. He deserved the chance. Batted for Mumbai in lower order and then when he got promoted to Number 3 he made most of his chances. He had top scored with a 100 when other Mumbai batsmen flopped badly. I think that was against Hyderabad. He made a name in FC for Mumbai over 3  or 4 seasons.

 

 

After few years as ODI amd T20i opener, he played few tests at 5 or 6 iirc. Had he played as middle order batsman, I would not have been surprised if he averaged above 45.

 

 

For an Indian opener to average 40 in international cricket, his performance is average in tests; neither poor nor good.

 

He should have retired an year earlier though and certainly should not habe felt entitled to chose a time for his retirement to his liking. His comments in last few momths were awful as well
