Building a team for 400 in odi on regular basis

250 looked like a dream in 20 overs but now team india does it on regular basis

India right now has the talent to score 350-400 on regular basis to outbat the opposition

Key is to

Blast the opposition in first powerplay targetting 90-100

Score at 7 from 10-38

Blast again last 12 overs

Need dasher at top

Hitters at lower order

Batting till 8

Here is a proposed such line up

Jaiswal

Suryawanshi

Kishan

Gill

Iyer

Pandya

Verma/Rinku

Axar/Rana

First off Kela is an absolute must, he's taken up the finisher role extremely well IMO, we cant just trust Hardik here

Also more than anything we need to find wicket taking bowlers in ODIs, there is no getting around that fact, teams will fancy 350 plus against our bowling rn.

Varun solved a lot of issues in ODIs recently but dont think he'll be a factor going forward.

think having a better bowling attack is more important right now . Without Bhumra our attack is pathetic. If we do not have high quality bowlers atleast have some bowlers who can be defensive to start with.

Need of the hour -

1. A left arm quick with good death bowling - we should scout for some new talent - If one of Mangesh yadav ,Naman tiwari can become good  would be a gr8 boost.  Another option- Arshdeep becomes more consistent in his death bowling with ability to bowl good yorkers when needed with increased pace.

2. An Express pacer - Not many on horizen. A fully fit mayank yadav or Ashok sharma  if they add some defensive bowling skills .

3. Pace All rounders - disappointing so far  wr.t. Bawa , Nitish  . Should also look at R S Ambrish U19 player

4. A swing bowler with batting ability - Try Aquib Nabi esp for Sena conditions .

5. Include 2 batters with bowling ability - Give chance to Riyan parag and make Abhishek and Tilak to develop their bowling.

6. Pace bowler with power hitting - Harshit Rana

I would make below changes  ASAP to fill some voids -

1. Include Riyan Parag.

2. Try out Mangesh Yadav as LA quickie with death bowling ability and power hitting.

3. Try - Ashok sharma/Mayank if fully fit.

4. Bawa /Nitish - atleast one of them have to come good within a year . give chances early

5. Include jaiswal,

6. Include Ruturaj, Sooryavanshi  in 15 member sqaud.

7. Make Rana , Aquib Nabi part of 15

8. Try out among Prashant Veer ,Harsh Dubey, Sindhu , Sutar .

9. Need 1  Mad max batter at top - Abhishek or Sooryavanshi

looking at SA WCup try to find

1. PP dashing opener - Abhishek /Sooryavanshi/Samson.

 2. Batter with bowling ability - Riyan Parag /Tilak

3. All rounder - Nitish/Bawa

4. LA spin - Axar

5. Express pacer- Mayank Yadav/Ashok Sharma/Harshit Rana

6. LA quick  with death bowling skill & power hitting -Mangesh Yadav.

7. Swing Bowler with batting ability & death bowling ability -Aquib Nabi

8. Proper opener -Jaiswal

This will also provide back ups for Rohit , Virat, KL, Iyer , Siraj, Arshdeep

Its also an absolute must that we need a backup who knows how to consolidate or finish the last 10 overs. SA pitches can be both a green mamba or flat decks (with 400+ totals)

If you want 400 you need finishers. INdia consistently mucks it up in the end overs.

Since 2025 death over performances

West Indies 10.59 (probably played minnows)

England 9.05

New zealand 8.88

USA 8.82

Scotland 8.65

Australia 8.54

Afghanistan 8.35

South Africa 7.8

Nepal 7.78

India 7.7

Zimbabwe 7.61

Pakistan 7.27

Netherlands 7.27

Not possible, not just with Ind but any other team too 400 on regular basis. Need template, right now most team has a sorted template to get 300-320, and push to 350 on a good day.

Asking to add another 80 runs to get to 400 on regular basis will need a new template. Need to bat deep need 2 batters who can score 100 of sub 80 balls <-- hopefully these 2 batters are in top4.

Right now team have 2 batters, one of whom can score run-a-ball ton and another make quick 80ish and some other chip-in with decent scores

Have to go with 8-3 combo (batting depth till 8) and only 3 specialist bowlers. As long as we don't compromise on this approach, we will be fine. A big score acts like an additional bowler and in knockouts, batting depth always pays off.

We need 2 left handers in top 6 and will be bonus if the bowl occasionally as 6th bowler.

I don't think Rohit can make it to World cup 2027. Kohli, iyer ,Rahul are must

Gill

Abhishek

Kohli

Iyer

Tilak

Rahul

Hardik

Harshit

Kuldeep

Arshdeep

Bumrah

Axar

Pant

Varun

Siraj

It's impossible to score 400+ on all pitches/against all attacks.

Think we should prepare for each venue at the next World Cup

There may be the odd pancake wicket but 99% of the time you can win at Centurion  with 320-350, Johannesburg with 315-325 and Blomfontein with 290+ etc.

350+ is very rare in South Africa.

Should not make the mistake of going too hard too early on those wickets

Jaiswal in place of Abhishek. Abhishek has a List A average in 20s. Sai should also be in the scheme of things, and Axar in place of one of the pacers (Arshdeep or Harshit). Have to go with batting options till 8 and that should be a non-negotiable.

It is achievable only when you have 3 insane finishers someone who can go nuts in the last 10 overs. 120 to 130 in the last 10. 280 in 40 overs is not that hard for top/middle order. That is achievable even with risk free circket on road. But that finish push is where most teams will fail to achieved 400.

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/icc-cricket-world-cup-2023-24-1367856/australia-vs-new-zealand-27th-match-1384418/full-scorecard

This match is an example

Australai

10 overs 118/0  - you need 282 from 40 overs

10-20 overs 59/1 - spinners somewehat slowed down the progress   187/1 after 20.. needed 213 in 30 overs distinctly possible in this day and age

20-30 overs 43/2  dramatic slow down in this phase smith killed the momentum. -  230/3 after 30 overs

30-40 overs 62/2  very moderate scoring givne the start 292/5 after 40 overs

Because of first 10 overs they still were in a position to get to 400

But

In the last 10 overs

First 5 overs they added only 37 runs. That was woeful. 7 an ove

In the last 5 overs they added another 59 runs Thanks to one big over cummins/iglis  vs neesham  27 runs

387/6 in 48 overs

You would think this team would get to 400 despite all the mess up in the middle overs.  They added a grand total of 1 more run

Boult took 3 for 1 in the 49th over

They were bowled out with 4 balls to spare

Two things have to go near perfect to withstand any mishap in the middle overs. First 10 overs, Last 10 overs.

I was talking specifically about South African conditions. 350+ is very rare there, regardless of strategy.

Evne there it is possible as the tracks won't be bowler friendly as we think. But there are a certain things that has to go perfectly.  England/SA/India these three teams has a chance to touch 400 once due to batting depth.

Which tracks ? There are 8 venues.

Even in Johannesburg, it's not a given that it will be that flat.

Pitches there are a lot trickier than they look.

Of course, if it is going to be a rare belter of a pitch , then you have to bat as aggressively as possible but such pitches are not common in South Africa.

Don't confuse their T20 pitches with their ODI pitches.

Even in India, Chinnaswamy has the reputation of being a belter but in ODI cricket , 340 is more than enough to defend.

Abhisek/Sanju both are t20 player do not have good List A records.

Mangesh has to played domestic cricket, much, he just played Mp-t20 league. Do not even know if he can bowl 10 overs in a game or not. Plus he is sub 135 kmph bowler (if not wrong) even at t20 levels
