A player should be rated highly only when he can perform against big teams, both home and away.   Should apply to players of all teams.

In this series, and in the last 2 tests vs England,  Pujara has elevated himself from a good batsman to a potential great one.

And the way he has bossed the Aussie attack in the crucial 4th test ... is so pleasing to see.

It bodes well for Team India to have 2 all condition 50+ average batsmen who are still reasonably young.

Very happy for Pujara.  All the best  !

Necer Ever doubted his class and ability. All ways maintained that His failures were down to insecurities and team selction politics

He did not have any insecurity during the 2014 tours of NZ, England and Australia.

Fact is ... he has made some technical changes for playing in Australia this time.  His grip is a bit higher ... so he is standing a bit more upright and handling the Australian bounce better.  And his county stint helped him improve his game against swing and seam.

Player of the series confirmed with this knock

almost single handedly made enough to make our bowlers effort count .... if we win the series, this is probably the best batting performance, along with may be Gavaskar's in WI (can't recall many in series winning cause)

PS similar to Gavaskar's in 1971 in WI

Sunny scored 774 but  Kerry Packer players missed that series.  Also Sunny did debut in the second test of that series iirc after having a finger infection prior to first test.  Nevertheless Pujara is yet to bat second time in second innings. This is gonna be close.

He  allways knew ( even fans like me could see it too , so he may have known it way before) that he will be sacrificed so that we can have Rohit in team and later few other darlings of Bunty.

Only under Kumble, he Seemed to be secure of his place.

Intact, his stint in County was also used as reason to drop him, each time he was brought back, India gave some fight.

I rate Gavaskar as Ind's best test batsman .... so if Pujara outdoes him or comes close, it is a great achievement

Same here, in tests I rate Sunny as the best Indian batsman I have seen. I agree if Pujara comes close to that series Sunny had in 1971 , it's going to be legends stuff imo.

In terms of absolute runs, Pujara may not .... but in terms of difference b/w him and other batsmen, he is close or right up there (Gavaskar's performances vs others in that series)

Dhoni never dropped Pujara.  We are talking about 2014 away tours here.

Even now, he has played 11 of the 12 away tests in 2018-19.

:hatsoff:

and to think this guy was dropped to accommodate guys like Rohit Sharma and Raina!!!

so many times he had to cover for incompetence of the openers (Dhawan, Vijay, Lokesh) and play-out new ball (upto 20th over), infact most games outside Asia he has been the defacto opener
