Nope. They left because they had only 5 spots in the playing XI to fight for. If there was no quota, they would have stayed in SA, played for them and earn a lot of money through IPL contract.

Today's loss was more due to SA's bowling not batting. They anyway have choked to chase 300+ totals in worldcup so i doubt abd's presence would have affected result of this match.

May be he no longer wants to stay in SA.Given their messy political situation,he probably wanted to focus on his family and their future.Also,staying fit for 20 overs game is easier than staying fit for 50 overs game.

Most overhyped cricketer ever. In fact I respect him for rubbishing all those memes about him like AB played hockey, was a tennis champ ,swimming champ, discovered scientific breakthroughs, is a PhD in nuclear physics etc etc that probably RCB fans helped propagate.

 

He is a choker and yes Obviously is a very good bat. No doubt about that but we have made him bigger than what he is due to some IPL exploits.

 

He has bashed WI in a couple of games and the cricketing fraternity especially on ICF went  in to collective orgasm. On one hand we ridicule, nitpick and over analyze  a guy who has 3 odi 200s and 4 t20I 100s and all other accomplishments  discussed before. His IPL heroics are also ridiculed as oh it is just only IPL but doesn’t seem to apply to ABDV.

 

Looks like SA have moved on from apartheid but we are still stuck in the colonialism mindset with the gora complex.

 

Very Good player but by no means an ATG he is made out to be. Chickened our and ran away. More respect to some of the WI free lancers like Gayle and Russell especially Gayle with an ailing body and relatively declining skills is giving it his all.

He did not earn any respect for dumping his country in all important WC. No one had any objection for his playing in IPL but skipping world cup and saying IPL was more important than WC shows he is one selfish creature.

@prinzo's point and I would also say that the discrimination white cricketers in SA have to endure is not visible in the public. There is a reason why fresh talented white SA fast bowlers want to play for English counties only.

That's a misconception. 20 over cricket has different fitness requirements compared to longer formats, your fast twitch muscle fibers play a dominating role in this format compared to say tests where endurance is the priority and slow twitch muscle fibers matter more.

he won SA two major test series before retiring , so thats fair enough. Also, I always though he was a certified choker as one cant be run out so many times in crucial matches as he used to be. May be it dawned upon him winning the World Cup is not his cup of tea.

Mentally and physically he was shot. He was not keen on playing tests but his cricket board wanted him to play all formats and not choose one over another. He had already taken a long break from test cricket so he couldn't negotiate any deal for quitting tests and staying on in ODIs till the world cup.

It was AB who denied India a Test series win in SA last time. 

 

Yesterday was a perfect opportunity for AB to play his trademark innings after the fall of two wickets when SA sent Miller instead. AB would score 70-80 runs in next 50 balls and depart  after bringing the run-rate down to just over 6 , thus allowing the likes of Miller and Duminy to finish off the chase with ease. 

 

Abour calling him a choker in main matches,  he even played a decent knock in SA last Semi Final match against NZ during 2015 WC but a freak innings by Elliot ended their hopes.

Retiring early doesn't mean a player is much less than those who carry on. He may not have the exclusive trophy cabinet or some leading statistic on being a flat track bully but those who watched him play enjoyed his contributions to the game and his all round prowess with the bat & in the field.

Considering the hurdles put in front of Kohli for him to lay claim to the greatest title. ABDV doesn't deserve any of that.

Massively let down SA. Not sure what exact reasons for his retirement, but won't be remembered for anything other than being an exciting cricketer.

But he left them less than a year to restructure the whole team with him leaving

It's not only whites. It's the coloureds and south African born Indians aswell. Hell even our great grandparents are born in SA. But at school level and provincial black gets preference in all aspects.

Since Kallis stopped playing SA were always struggled to balance the playing 11. As a result ABD was asked to keep more so that they could accomodate an extra batsman or bowler. The back pain led to his retirement. SA board should have managed his workload well.

Vettori wasn't officially retired. He was inactive for quite a bit and made a comeback. AB did a grand announcement to walk off into the sunset and then came back next morning. His legacy is surely tarnished now. A selfish player who put his self interest above the team's and doesn't think much of the rest of the team playing day in and day out.

He simply made the offer seeing the situation of the team.Everyone makes mistakes in decisions.And they should be allowed to make amends.SA badly needs AB.They should have looked at the bigger picture.He could have replaced Duminy who is in no form at all.

AB was shamed a lot for picking & choosing the series & formats in which he wanted to play.He had been having lots of back problems & wanted to avoid major injuries.He had the option of either playing in every series or retire.If he would have been allowed by their management to pick & choose,he might not have taken the decision to retire.

Playing in T20s has lower fitness requirements than ODIs,which have become extended versions of T20s due to high scoring games. People can accuse him for being greedy. But he has every right to take that decision.

The guy gave everything for his team in most of the matches.Calling him selfish is just over the top.

As much as I respect de Villiers as a cricketer, SA did the right thing here. He called it a quit even when he was in his prime and knew that WC was 1 year away, others had to pick up their bats to cover his retirement and performed and earned the place in the 11. Rightfully turned down ...
