What are your expectations from Rishabh pant?

Make himself a permanent place in the team. Fulfil at-least 80% of his potential. Yesterday he batted sensibly and pulled off a few boundaries finding the gaps. Hope to see more intelligent batting + shot selection from him and conversion of good starts into substantial scores.

Maybe throw a hard tackle at Oldie, in soccer, & get him out of the KO

Hope he does a 92 Inzi in the semi....our trump card this time. Teams wouldn't have studied Pant that closely due to him being a rookie and late entrant, he has the element of surprise which will be handy in an ICC KO match.

Depends on where he bats most of his career. If he bats at #5 and above, I'd be disappointed with those stats. I think with the way that the ODI game is evolving, he can definitely be a #5 for us, if not a #4. He is definitely better equipped than Pandya, Jadhav and Dhoni.

 

Post-WC, Dhoni and Jadhav can be booted out. Pant would cover both those roles, opening up another lower middle order batting slot. I expect one of the rising stars (Shubman or Shaw) to be phased in at #4 and Pant take up the #5 slot.

 

He might also have to be rested for bilateral T-20s if he is going to be a regular in all 3 formats. Perhaps Ishan Kishan can take up the gloves in that format.

Pant has shots all around the wicket but he needs to cut down on the reverse sweeps and other cheeky shots early on in his innings.

Batting wise for India we have just 2 genuine batsmen that singlehandedly win us the game and the world cup in Hitman and Kohli.

 

Pant and Pandya are the next two. Together they could easily score 130 off the final 10 overs if a platform has been set. Pant needs guidance, but I get the feeling that he is not been given it at the moment.

 

Even if Pant fails in the remaining games, he has raw potential and will learn from this. The blame should be on selectors for not giving him every ODI game possible when he showed this potential.

 

Absolute disgrace he wasnt in the original squad.

This is what a good senior player will tell him. Feels strange that this advice has not been passed on. Its fine for T20 but not ODI.

Kishan should be the one, next to be drafted in LO as he's probably as talented as Pant at the top of the order, if not more.

With oldie eating up all the balls, Pant & Pandya are instructed heck forced to do so from ball 1

alternatively, he can open after dhawan or rohit retire, but in the short term he will have to play in the middle order. gill would be a good fit at 4 as you suggested. I think kishan has been regressing a bit unfortunately, but he's another talented strokemaker

he is probably about the same level of talent, but he lacks application. his game has, if anything, regressed in the past 1 yr or so.

That's what can happen if you aren't given games at the highest level to improve, we've wasted so many games on Oldie, Dud even DK that it's embarrassing with the batting riches at our disposal!

certainly. we have potentially good backup openers (shaw, mayank, gaekwad), middle order bats (gill, iyer) and keepers (kishan, samson) but the selection policies prior to WC were confused.
