That is perfectly fine. The format was known to everyone years in advance. They have won just the adequate number of matches required to be in top 4.

 

From semis onwards, it is all about two good days and Kiwis will have the same opportunities as others to win the WC.

Just goes to show you, there are usually only about 4 competitive teams in ODI cricket - if that.  That's why "making the semi-finals" is not that big a deal.  By the same token, not making the semi-finals should be seen for the rank failure that it is.

its actually a 9 team world cup in terms of points

All 9 teams won against Afgh and got the 2 points which can be deducted from all teams without making any difference in standings..

Also this has been a competitive world cup..before it began many said you need to win 5 matches to qualify and that has not been the case

Including Pak and BD, there are six competitive. I wouldn't consider WI and SL as top competitive teams in this WC. 

But for SL beating Eng and Pak beating Eng and NZ, there were no aberrations in the top 4 placeholders.

Pakistan's issue was not points. It was run rate. That heavy loss against West Indies, India came back to bite them badly.

Loss to WI cost them dearly... not just for points but it damaged their NRR immensely.. 

 

And whoever made decision to not to play Haris Sohail from the beginning should be questioned.. He was good at WC2015 as well but then dont know what happened in last four years but what a mistake..

In a tournament of 10 teams, if you beat the bottom half you obviously end in the top half, thereby having a great chance of being in Semis. Is this rocket science ?
