Shaw’s athletic ability is a concern

Check the thread on Jasprit Bumrah started by @express bowling where a lot of jnanis were dispensing jnan on why Bumrah is strictly a ODI bowler who should be nowhere close to test team. They aren't seen much on that thread.

Same is the case here. Shaw will go absolutely fine in test cricket. His basics are absolutely sorted.

1. Plays straight as an arrow.

2. Picks the length quicker than any other batsman playing currently

3. Excellent balance at the crease

4. Can play close to the body

On the other hand, as we saw in this series itself, he does have a bit of impetuosity and a penchant to play in the air. Neither of these issues are technical but rather a reflection of his age where one wants to be daring as can be. The more he plays, the better his judgment will become.

he looks flashy, but a lot of his fundamentals are sound. I reckon that he can do well (albeit inconsistently) overseas and can be beast in SC-type conditions.

Manju had a huge run out problem on the same tour IIRC. May be he was not as slow runner as Shaw but he did have a habit of getting runout often in fact in that B & H tri series

The problem for Manju and Sachin was that except for may be Azhar (Who had a horror tour except for couple of good innings), the rest of the Indian team was filled with poor runners which includes our coach Shastri.

In the 3rd ODI itself, we saw Shaw bat more sensibly.

If he gets to play a few games on the trot, he will work out what is working for him at this level and what is not.

Shaw has the game to be a very very good all-format batsman.

Regarding his fitness ... he is young and is bound to improve his fitness if he gets to play without a break.

Shaw is the real deal. He has every change to be successful in tests.

Gun batsmen. Absolute Box office but a piss poor athlete.

I haven't seen this gun batter do much against elite sides at senior level, which btw any "top gun" player should be capable of. Before heaping lots of praise on him, or Mayank, how about let them prove themselves in alien conditions & especially tough oppositions? For all the hate KL got he actually did face horrendous challenges opening at the top, before declaring these two Viru-Jai how about observing their output & technique first :bebored:

I first saw him in a Netflix movie of 2011-12 vintage where he was a little boy barely taller than the bat. Can't believe he now looks like a middle aged man!

Ye to unkil lag rha hai...How old was when he moved to Mumbai?? Biharis by default add a few years to their DoB.

At the most he would have understated by 3-4 years, which still puts him at 24-25. But he looks 34-35.

You can have all the talent in the world but if you are not fit enough or athletic in a game that requires you to be a prime shape in this day and age, you will not go too far.

Shaw is an exciting talent but if he cannot move in the field, cannot really bowl and running between the wickets can cost extra runs or even worse run outs than the benefit and harm of playing him are not in balance.

For T20 though let’s see how the IPL goes, if he can get 30(10) kind of starts regularly and on good days bigger scores than he has a slot in that format but don’t think he is fit for odis which requires both endurance of test cricket and fast pace of T20z

Its just poor genes. His hairline clearly suggests so.

The star players can get away without chasing the ball too fast or without diving when the ball is near while playing domestic matches. However, in high profile Tests , the same players are expected to show intent while fielding, which may not be the best skill of the cricketer. Such cricketers who suddenly have to step up their fielding skills drastically higher to come to a par standard, usually get noticed.

Surprised to see someone like @express bowling not noticing the flaw and defending Shaw’s athletic ability or the lack of it.

People bring up Sehwag. Yes he looked like a middle aged sarkaari babu most of his career but Sehwag was very fast between wickets in fact that was one of the stark similaritie with Sachin that were pointed out early in his career, he wasn’t just a see ball, hit ball player. Sure he wasn’t an athletic outfielder but he had immense concentration that resulted in big knocks and he was one of our greatest slip catchers. You don’t score 200’s and 300’s by just hit and block, there is a lot of strike rotation involved.

Dravid kept a lot for us which takes incredible amount of fitness and was not the fastest but was adequate. Great slip fielder. Laxman a notch below Dravid in the athletic department but could play long match winning innings and was again a great slip fielder thanks to his concentration abilities.

I am a huge fan of Shaw but just having great skills will only get you that far. He is a very ordinary fielder too which is unacceptable in this day and age. Running between the wickets is as important as strokeplay in cricket.

Let’s take a look across the border their best bats statistically are Younis Khan and Miandad both known for their fitness and running between the wickets on the other hand batsmen much more talented than them like Moyo and Inzamam achieved a lot less.

Also it’s not just about individual runs, I remember Ian Chappell, Boycott etc pointing  out how Sachin would steal high risk 1’s and 2’s even if he was the non striker ( well I will elaborate in the weekly Sachin is selfish thread later on)

Shaw has to be multi dimensional and right now there are at least 7-8 players ready to take his slot if he doesn’t pick up.

One of the worst fielders amongst the youngsters. Dropped a catch, did not even attempt to save the boundary as he just ran casually towards it like Munaf Patel used to and then allowed a single even though he was at short point !!

As a batsman he is very good across all formats but his agility on the field is very bad for his age.
