I'd have played the same but considering the experience of past two matches where Yadav and Jaddu got injured, it will be foolish not to expect one more bowler's injury. Best bet is play another bowler even if the batting resource is depleted.

Need five bowlers, bring Thakur in place of mayank

It is a very difficult decision.

If Pant is fit to keep then Shardul in place of Saha can be an option.

If Pant can't keep then we won't have any option.  Neither Saha nor Ashwin can be a No 6.

Shardul does not have enough batting ability to replace a specialist batsman.

The usual strategy is to go with 6 bats, 1 wk, and 4 bowlers. In that case if Vihari is not playing, then Mayank is a forced pick. That gives some options like Pant at 6 and Saha as the wk at 7 or Shaw at 6 and Pant at 7 as the wk if his injury doesnt prevent him to keep. this maybe asking too much from Pant as he was taking painkillers today to go out to bat. Pant's injury should be considered as it will be a hard grind for 5 days. If he has difficulties in keeping, playing both Pant and Saha will be the way to go.

The left field pick will be to go with 5,1,5. This may happen because of Rahane. In this case, Pant is 6 and keeper (again TM should weigh the difficulties because of his injury before doing this) and allows the option to go with Kuldeep. This may weaken our batting a bit (I say a bit because Shaw or Saha haven't scored many runs in Adelaide). But this will also allow us to bowl proper bowlers throughout Aus innings and they will be under constant pressure and can crumble. To those who think Kuldeep will be ineffective, take a look at Warne's record at the gabba. No Shardul or Natarajan please. They will be as effective as Vinay Kumar on a spicy pitch in Perth who was taken to the cleaners by Warner.

I am assuming Ashwin will be good to go but Vihari won't.

Sharma

Gill (There's a rapport going at the top, so don't change openers)

Pujara

Pant (just loved P/P combo. L/R. Young/old. Aggro/calm.  Hence Pant at 4)

Rahane

Ashwin

Saha (w/k) - feel so much better with Saha keeping. Let Pant do his thing with the willow.

K. Yadav

Saini

Bumrah

Siraj

It is too light on batting.

I doubt Pant will be fit to keep. He will probably play as a specialist batsman.

The Gabba will be more pace friendly than spin based on history of last 5 tests there. It will also be on the flatter side with something in it for the pacers. Exactly how the Aussies like it. Good fast bowling is rewarded.

With Jadeja out I think he needs to be replaced by a pacer. I feel that we can trust Ashwin with the bat at the Gabba. So of the remaining options I will pick Natrajan over Thakur and ask him to bowl wicket to wicket and build pressure. Saini can be spray gun so I dont think India can carry both Thakur and Saini. I feel it will be a mistake to not have 5 bowlers at the Gabba.

Re Pant and Vihari. If Pant cannot keep then you have no option but to call in Saha as the keeper. If Vihari is fit then this means going with 4 bowlers. Pant cannot be dropped and should play as a batsman. Vihari has a hamstring niggle. Not sure if there is enough time for him to recover.

My Team

Sharma

Shaw

Pujara

Rahane

Pant/ Saha (if pant injured Saha)

Vihari/Agarwal

Ashwin

Natrajan/Saha (if pant players as a batsman, Natrajan if Pant players as a batsman and keeper)

Saini

Bumrah

Siraj

Yasir Shah could not trouble aussie batsmen on gabba pitch. For that reason Kuldeep might not be good option.Thakur would be better choice - very accurate with good out-swing ,stamina of test bowler.Thakur is best betsman among reserve bowlers.
