How come 18 innings? He's just played 8 test innings in Eng, a stress free 50 - in large part due to his bowling admittedly. Did I mention the fact that batting was relatively easier down the order because the ball got old, big reason why Curran & Buttle scored so many runs!  Now take that 3rd test way & he's got literally tailender like stats -

Pujara has turned it around as a top order batsman with his recent performance in Eng, back to back series performances in Aus (that inning at Adelaide in 2018!), and in NZ in tough conditions, getting out to good balls

At the moment, my AT Ind 11 would be something like below (from players across the eras):

 

• #1-3: Gavaskar, Sehwag & Pujara 
• #4-5: 2 from Dravid, Sachin, Kohli, VVS, ... (all are good batsmen so anyone can be slotted in)
• #6: Reserved for batting AR -> Mankad (Ind's biggest match winner in terms of avg difference in matches won. 100s in Aus and Eng. Can open the batting too so good when facing the 2nd new ball. If he bowled on rank turners, his bowling avg would be better too. A thread on him) 
• #7: WK AR -> Pant (the new boy) or Engineer (opened for India in many games so good with facing the 2nd new ball) 
• #8: Reserved for bowling AR ->  Kapil (I need strong batting till #8)
• #9-10: 2 Pace bowlers: Bumrah and Shami (since they bowl well as a pair). Other options: Srinath & Zaheer 
• #11: Specialist spinner (to be supported by Mankad) ->: Chandra, somewhat of a mystery spinner (won Ind test series in ENG in relatively unhelpful conditions)

yeah his avg drops to below 30 since WTC started. you don't think a top order batsman averaging in 20s is a big deal?

We have already identified that he isn't in the best of form (unless he has to be in a purple patch all the time) but still contributing as seen in the last series in Aus (w/o him Ind would not have won its 2nd series in a row - heroics in Sydney, most 50+ scores in the series, and so on). Ind still has a chance to get into WTC final because of likes of Pujara ... Let others do well too esp. in Ind

but you said a guy who saved that game in the end and took 13 wickets in the same series and was one of the highest wickets takers for India and then took 20 wickets already in the next 3 tests should raise his game

so what is the benchmark for Pujara?

I don't know man, he isn't in great form and he is still planning to participate in ipl even though there is a good chance that he will be warming the bench for most of the tourney. I now wish he played full summer in counties to prepare for the wtc final and the england series. He can play ipl next year when two additional teams are introduced and there is more demand for players

I initially loved the idea of Pujara in ipl as its a good chance for him to show a different side of his game, but if he is going to struggle like this he better get as much red ball practice as he can before the final

We can't control those things as everyone is in IPL anyways (likes of Rahane could be warming the benches. We do not know what Vihari could be doing, and so on ) but good to see the hopes on Pujara for Ind to do well overseas ... He tends to raise his game when its counts so hope that it continues

We are talking about consistency in most conditions over a period of time ... say at least 3-4 brilliant series in a row or a specified cluster

Same. Prove yourself in most conditions over a of period, which as discussed Pujara did in Eng, 2 back to back series in Aus, in NZ in tough conditions batting in the difficult top order (got out to good balls)

 

Pujara can serve as an inspiration on how to turn things around (was relatively ordinary as a most conditions player early on in his career)
