Ghavri used to bowl spin, sometime with longer runup ( some think that was fast bowling )  and some with shorter, without changing his pace .

His bowled of Greg Chappel is still a folklore. It led to indias victory with Aus chasing a minuscule total and India drew the series.. the wicket of greg chappell if you consider todays context was as good as Steve Smiths.. that kind of form he was in during those days. Infact from 1978 to 1986 India toured Australia thrice and had upper hand in most tests though they couldnt win a series

 

1978 they lost 3-2 and should have won the last test as they fell short by handfull of runs

 

1981 : drew 1-1 ( ghavri special and sandeep patil crazy knock )

 

1986: 0-0. We should have won both chasing. India aborted the chase.

There's another folklore ... in the course of his 86 (n.o.?) against Border's Ozzies, he hit the ball so hard off a Geoff Dymock delivery, it ripped the seam.

Karsan Ghavri remains one of the six Indian seamers to have taken a hundred Test wickets; 109 wickets at 33.54 does not sound amazing, but if one considers the facts that he often bowled in India, and usually bowled against the wind, it does not seem that bad. He had a deceptively fast bouncer, and often foxed batsmen with an abrupt change of pace.

Ghavri’s bouncers were famous even at international level. At domestic level, batsmen feared his bouncers. recalled an incident when an Uttar Pradesh opening batsman came to the Bombay dressing-room before a Ranji match, touched Ghavri’s feet, and asked him not to bowl a bouncer at him! LOOLLL

Considering that in home games he often bowled 3 overs before the spinners took over, that was pretty good. When he started playing in the 70s, the record for a medium pacer was something like 74 wickets held by Ramakant Desai. Given all that this makes Kapil Dev’s achievements even more remarkable. But prior to Kapil Dev, a case could be made that Ghavri was India’s best medium pacer.

Thats Mohammed Nisar.. indias best pace bowler before Kapil

My earlier post about Ghavri and his friend Dihraj Prassana the funny thing was both Saurashtra players  , both moved to other states, both bowled left arm seam and spin, both played for India . Ghavri was more a seamer and Prassana more a spinner 

Can you imagine opening the batting against them and getting 3 seamers and 3 spinners an over from both ends  lol
